ref. #[36387]Amsterdam Pieter Meijer 1774. Sm.8vo. Modern wrappers. With engraving on title-page by Reinier Vinkeles the missing plate added in photocopy. 486 pp. From: Tooneelpoëzij van Nicolaas Simon van Winter en Lucretia Wilhelmina van Merken. - The play Monzongo the royal slave a tragedy was written in 1765 by the Amsterdam merchant and poet Nicolaas Simon van Winter 1718-1795. In the introduction he writes that he was touched by the slave revolt that broke out in the plantation colony of Berbice in 1763 and the cruel punishments that had been carried out after its crushing. This was the first reaction on the revolt in Berbice. His tragedy however did not take place in a Dutch plantation colony but in Spanish America about the conquest of Mexico in 1519. Van Winter realized that the banishment of slavery would take some time but hoped that his poetic work would help to bring it to an end. His romantic tragedy became one of the most popular anti-slavery productions in the history of Dutch theatre and is one of the first calling for its abolition. - Rare. 1841ref. 24093Northampton County: Kleckner Rolf und Williams 1841. Second Printing. Full contemporary leather with a mounted label. Good; binding somewhat "skinned" on the front board; joints wearing. 12mo 839 1 - blank pp. 38 inserted woodblock plates. A massive compendium in three parts devoted to the horse its ailments and cures. The text according to the title appears to contain remedies that have been added by Winter. There is a question as to the number of plates. Tucher #2201 states 39 but OCLC lists anywhere between 16 and 41. The book has the appearance of being carelessly made up; the plates were separately printed on inferior paper and are generic rather than directly relevant to the text there are a number of repeats. They apparently were added to enhance the appeal of the book at the point of sale and therefore do not form part of the collation. Unusual but aimed at profit not information. Scarce. Absent from American Imprints. Kleckner, Rolf und Williams hardcover books
