Stampfer beschreibt sein Instrument: "Das Instrument ist eine Röhre von etwa zehn Zoll Länge. in der sich eine zweite Röhre verschieben läßt. Am Ende der größeren Röhre ist eine Konvexlinse eingesetzt die bis auf zwei dünne Spalten abgedeckt ist. Die Spalten sind parallel angeordnet. Die innere Röhre enthält eine Blende mit einem feinen Spalt der mit den beiden Spalten parallel läuft. Abgeschlossen ist die Bohre mit einem Mattglas. Hält man nun das Instrument gegen das Tageslicht so sieht man zwei lichte Streifen deren dunkler Zwischenraum immer kleiner wird je weiter man die innere Röhre herauszieht bis derselbe endlich ganz verschwindet und nur eine feine scharfbegrenzte I.ichtlinie sichtbar wird. Auf dem Auszugsfernrohr befindet sich eine Skala welche unmittelbar die Brennweite des tauglichsten Augenglases angibt." Wenn es auch nicht möglich war restlos genau mit dem Instrument die Sehschärfenbestimmung durchzuführen war es doch ein wesentlicher Fortschritt. Astigmatismus konnte damit kaum festgestellt werden doch weist schon Stampfer darauf hin daß eine Überprüfung für jedes Auge getrennt erfolgen muß und daß eine Ungleichheit beider Augen öfters vorkommt als man glaubt Plößl nahm die Verfertigung dieses Instruments im Jahre 1833 auf."
