1934ref. ABE-1729624696870The Wine and Food Society 1934. London: The Wine and Food Society 1934 - 1962. Eighteen octavo volumes uniformly bound in maroon buckram with leather title and volume spine labels comprising a complete run of the first 116 issues of this landmark quarterly devoted to all things gastronomical. Andre Simon was in the words of Hugh Johnson "the charismatic leader of the English wine trade for almost all of the first half of the 20th century and the grand old man of literate connoisseurship for a further 20 years" though his oblique writing style is said to have prompted the more analytical point-based wine review system later developed by Robert Parker. Each volume features essays on cooking fine dining and wine with period ads throughout. The wraps for each volume are bound in with staining to the front wrap of a few volumes; chipping to the spine labels of a few volumes with light rubbing and discoloration to cloth but a handsomely bound run of this important periodical. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine. The Wine and Food Society Hardcover
1876ref. 13221Erlangen & Stuttgart: Ferdinand Enke 1876. FIRST EDITION. With 9 lithographed plates 2 chromolithographs; wood engraved text illustrations. Half morocco over marbled boards; front blank leaf lacking large library label on first paste-down paper is brittle and occasionally chipped on a few fore-edges. First edition of this historic landmark in urology. In 1869 Simon performed the first successful intentional nephrectomy on a woman patient. That date marks the beginning of renal surgery which he here describes in great detail in Volume I. The second volume issued five years after the first treats the subject of kidney surgery on both injured and diseased kidney. He had proved that one healthy kidney can take over the entire excretion process. The illustrations are remarkable. Simon 1824-1876 was a distinguished German surgeon who first served as a military physician. He specialized in the fields of gynecology orthopedics and military surgery publishing a well known work on gunshot wounds. As professor of surgery at Rostock he published monographs on gynaecological plastic surgery as well as numerous other literary works in many areas of surgery. Ferdinand Enke unknown

1911ref. 8431This is a rare collection of two lectures delivered by Andre Simon at Vintners' Hall in London in the early 1900's. Simon was a French-born wine merchant gourmet and prolific writer about wine. In 1908 he created 'The Wine Trade Club' with friends organizing tastings and technical lectures that foreshadowed the 'Institute of Masters of Wine' 45 years later. This collection constitutes two of six of Simon's lectures that were published. The lectures were published either separately "for distribution to the staff of provincial wine-merchants" or as a monthly supplement to issues of "Ridley's Wine and Spirit Trade Circular." The lectures published separately came in two versions - a "plain" version with paper wraps or - as offered here - a deluxe "presentation" version bound in green calf leather with gilt covers. Each lecture is a first edition published by Wyman & Sons in London. The following two lectures are included: "The Wine Trade of England: Past and Present." A Lecture Delivered at Vintners' Hall by The Wine Trade Club. 20th November 1911. "The Vineyards of the World." A Lecture Delivered at Vintners' Hall by The Wine Trade Club. 19th January 1912. Condition: Light soiling to the covers. Light wear to the top edge of both spines. Both books are firmly bound with no cracks and no loose pages. All covers are firmly attached. Both books have consistent foxing to the pages. There is a wine-themed vintage bookplate affixed to each front pastedown." Overall in Very Good- condition. Wyman & Sons

Following service in the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War he was appointed brigadier general in the regular army in 1900 leading the 14th Infantry Regiment during the Boxer Rebellion. By his death he was the last surviving high-ranking officer to have fought on the Union side. His account describes American and allied troop movements in China as well as day-to-day experiences of battle and the conduct of key officers. 25 appendices reproduce some of the despatches and general orders issued by US forces in Beijing reporting on progress and commending acts of bravery. Colonel Swett's 1925-2011 inscription reads: "Trevor W. Swett. Given to me by Mrs Patterson daughter of the author General Daggett. He lived in our community". 1964ref. 23148New York: N/A 1964. Quarto. Original red wrappers the upper cover lettered in gilt with title and the imprint "Studio Duplicating Service Inc." 140 mimeographed leaves printed on rectos only with additional leaf numbered "3-9A" in Act III secured with two brass screw brads. An early mimeographed acting script and bears the name of Broadway producer Saint-Subber on the title page; Saint-Subber; he would go on to produce seven of Simon's plays. Preceding the first published edition New York: Random House 1966 this script contains significant textual variations. Notably while the original Boston Colonial Theatre production omitted the Pigeon sisters in Act III the present version includes Cecily Pigeon in that act though in a markedly different textual form from the later published play. The Broadway production proved a landmark success earning Simon a Tony Award and leading to the celebrated film adaptation. Wrappers with some creasing and a small internal tape repair to the front panel. A very good copy of a rare and important pre-publication script. A classic American comedy about mismatched roommates Felix Ungar obsessively neat and Oscar Madison cheerfully slovenly. Inspired by Simon's brother the play explores friendship divorce and personality clashes with sharp wit and warmth. A major success it won a Tony Award and was later adapted into a popular 1968 film and television series. N/A unknown
