Title page signed by J. G. Kohler; bookplate of Ing. Dr. Edmund Neusser. Lovely copy. First edition. Klugel based his writings on that of Leonhard Euler 1707-1783 to whom the book is dedicated dedicated and his famous work on optics. In his parts VII and VIII he deals with the telescope and especially the microscope. / Euler's own work on the theory of the achromatic microscope was written as early as 1762 and 1771 when he dealt with the subject more fully. In 1774 Euler's pupil and friend Nicolas Fuss wrote a little book on how to construct an achromatic microscope. Klugel translated that work in 1778 and then followed that with this more thorough treatment being his Analytische Dioptrik also 1778. Due to the crudeness of design of the objective made in 1791by Francois Beeldsnyder 1755-1808 a colonel in the Amsterdam cavalry Mayall asserts and others uphold this view that he feels the discussion of the dates of origin or this instrument are at best unclear. – Mayall. 2001ref. 36752Bath: Old School Press 2001. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 131 of 230 copies signed by the poet and illustrator. From the press: "For the fifth title in our series of the work of contemporary British poets we were fortunate to have the opportunity of printing an extended four-part poem by Poet Laureate emeritus Andrew Motion. He was England's Poet Laureate from 1999-2009. Writing of his work Motion says 'A Long Story assembled itself over several years into a loose sequence of four sections none of them rhymed and all are written in a very loose rambling rhythm. I began with the wish to identify certain memories in my childhood which I've always considered to be 'spots of time' - ie moments which have a self-contained interest and drama - and ended up with scenes which anticipate even predict certain moods and attitudes I have as an adult. 'To complement Motion's narrative style we turned once more to leading wood-engraver Simon Brett whose ability to tell a story in a single sinewy image we greatly admire and who cut four wood-engravings for the book.'' For this elegant book the text was hand-set in 14pt Fournier italic and printed on 170gsm Magnani mould-made paper. Brett's engravings were printed from the wood onto dampened paper. The book was bound by Rachel and Richard James. It is quarter-bound with yellow cloth on the spine with a rich dark green hand-made paper from the Larroque mill covering the boards black Canson end-papers and the title embossed in gold on the front cover. In fine condition. Measures 8 x 11 inches. Unpaginated 44 pages PRI/082823. Old School Press hardcover books
2022ref. 138229Limited to 30 numbered copies signed by the artist / printer. The typefaces used were created by designers with a connection to Ukraine. The front cover title: Bifur - Adolphe Mouron Cassandre digitized by Richard Kegler; the front cover author: Arsenal - Andrij Shevchenko Berdyansk; poem and colophon: Genau - Aleksey Popovtsev Kyiv; and production Note: Bandera text - Andrij Shevchenko Berdyansk. From the artist: Writing shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 2022 Britain's poet laureate Simon Armitage responded to 'what is coming at us in obscene images through the news' with a poem titled Resistance published in The Guardian Newspaper. On reading the poem I felt an immediate empathy and in particular with Armitage's repetition of the words "it's war again". This illustrated edition was created to show solidarity with the people of Ukraine and to highlight the recurrent ubiquitous nature and folly of war. The illustrations are montages of manipulated contemporary and archival photographs combinded with my own drawings and images. The calligraphic words sometimes cross-written are drawn from not only the poem but also other sources - e.g. transcripts of a British Pathé newsreel a list of wars spanning two thousand years Putin's declaration of his mission the Ukrainian national anthem news headlines and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's speech to the British parliament. The setting of the verse lines echoes closed captions of news reports and follows Simon Armitage's layout of the poem: three-line verses with the second line indented once and the third line indented twice.
