The effects of the immense waves were felt as far away as France. Barometers in Bogota and Washington D.C. went haywire. Bodies were washed up in Zanzibar. The sound of the island's destruction was heard in Australia and India and on islands thousands of miles away. Most significant of all -- in view of today's new political climate -- the eruption helped to trigger in Java a wave of murderous anti-Western militancy among fundamentalist Muslims one of the first outbreaks of Islamic-inspired killings anywhere. Krakatoa gives us an entirely new perspective on this fascinating and iconic event. Harper Collins hardcover books

Simon's same willingness to open his heart to the reader permeates The Play Goes On. This second act takes the reader from the mid-1970s to the present a period in which Simon wrote some of his most popular and critically acclaimed plays including the Brighton Beach trilogy and Lost in Yonkers for which he won the Pulitzer Prize. Simon experienced enormous professional success during this time but in his personal life he struggled to find that same sense of happiness and satisfaction. After the death of his first wife he and his two young daughters left New York for Hollywood. There he remarried and when that foundered he remarried again. Told with his characteristic humor and unflinching sense of irony The Play Goes On is rich with stories of how Simon's art came to imitate his life. Simon's forty-plus plays make up a body of work that is a long-running memoir in its own right yet here in a deeper and more personal book than his first volume Simon offers a revealing look at an artist in crisis but still able and willing to laugh at himself. An English translation of the French play which was suppressed by legal authorities in New York City after fewer than two weeks at the Comedy Theatre in 1928 after being deemed an 'immoral' play. Drama critic Alexander Woollcott who called it "so beautiful a play. that it cannot fail. But. there is always the chance that New York will fail." later commented that the play was censored "in almost medieval secrecy. by the murderously effective and to my notion entirely vicious law." The play examines the world of prostitution in a controversial manner similar to Shaw's Mrs Warren's Profession which suffered the same treatment by authorities. This censorship inspired an outpouring of equally controversial dramatic productions leading to the Wales Padlock Law of 1927 which allowed playwrights producers and actors to be criminally prosecuted for their roles in these allegedly immoral works. Maya was the first play against which the law was used Wainscott The Emergence of the Modern American Theater 1914-1929 p. 76. This publication in book form followed the suppression of the play and the jacket illustration by Darcy this is probably Art Deco illustrator Lyse Darcy who produced a number of well-known advertisements for the French cosmetics company Guerlain showing two pairs of hands suggestively reaching upward towards the title character seems to be an open act of defiance against the law. The play inspired a film of the same name in 1949 starring Jean-Pierre Grenier and Viviane Romance which was directed by Raymond Bernard. Robert M. McBride & Company / J.J. Garrison-Morton #4985: "Translation of original 1911 French." Binet-Simon Scale: "A test for determining the relative development of intelligence especially of children consisting of a series of questions and tasks graded with reference to the ability of the normal child to deal with them at successive age levels." "The Stanford - Binet Intelligence Scales or more commonly the Stanford-Binet is an individually administered intelligence test that was revised from the original Binet-Simon Scale by Lewis M. Terman a psychologist at Stanford University. The Stanford - Binet Intelligence Scale is now in its fifth edition SB5 and was released in 2003. It is a cognitive ability and intelligence test that is used to diagnose developmental or intellectual deficiencies in young children. The test measures five weighted factors and consists of both verbal and nonverbal subtests. The five factors being tested are knowledge quantitative reasoning visual-spatial processing working memory and fluid reasoning. The development of the Stanford - Binet initiated the modern field of intelligence testing and was one of the first examples of an adaptive test. The test originated in France then was revised in the United States. It was initially created by the French psychologist Alfred Binet who following the introduction of a law mandating universal education by the French government began developing a method of identifying "slow" children for their placement in special education programs rather than removing them to asylums as "sick". As Binet indicated case studies might be more detailed and helpful but the time required to test many people would be excessive. In 1916 at Stanford University the psychologist Lewis Terman released a revised examination which became known as the "Stanford - Binet test". Chicago Medical Book Co hardcover books

But in 1879 Americans reacted to the advent of electrification with suspicion and fear. Forty years after Thomas Edison invented the incandescent bulb only 20 percent of American families had wired their homes. Meanwhile electrotherapy emerged as a popular medical treatment for everything from depression to digestive problems. Why did Americans welcome electricity into their bodies even as they kept it from their homes And what does their reaction to technological innovation then have to teach us about our reaction to it today In Dark Light Linda Simon offers the first cultural history that delves into those questions using newspapers novels and other primary sources. Tracing fifty years of technological transformation from Morse's invention of the telegraph to Roentgen's discovery of X rays she has created a revealing portrait of an anxious age. 1932ref. 22412New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas. Very Good in Very Good- dj. First American Edition. Hardcover. moderately shelfworn light-colored staining along front joint; jacket has paper loss at several corners various small nicks and tears some soiling and age-darkening to rear panel. Somewhat phantasmagorical novel about a young fellow the bastard son of a sailor who grows up in a grimy quayside London cul-de-sac and falls in love with a "slum-sprite" girl whose lowlife father runs the titular pub. Returning some years later from military service he finds that she's run off and become a celebrated chanteuse; he tracks her down to Rio but she denies her younger identity which of course forces him to spend the rest of the book trying to win her back. The New York Times reviewer although admiring of the writer's style was somewhat nonplussed by the novel calling it "a novel from Mars . . . a strange creation -- terse elliptical obscure peculiarly foreshortened" -- and yet "a rich and varied dish succinctly portioned out and well flavored with excitement." "Simon Jesty" was apparently a pseudonym but for whom I dunno. The author's entire literary output at least under that name seems to have consisted of this novel and one other "River Niger" published in 1935; the only possible clue to his identity is some kind of undefined connection with T.E. Lawrence who provided a strange sort of preface to the latter book based on an advance reading of the manuscript. Great noir-ish jacket illustration by the great Arthur Hawkins Jr. . 1932. B&W photographs One of the great musicals of the 1960s adapted from Federico Fellini's film "Nights of Cabiria." It was a triumph for choreographer Bob Fosse on the stage but a little less so in his 1969 screen adaptation which substituted Shirley MacLaine for Gwen Verdon. NOTE: Although there is no "first printing" or "first edition" statement in this copy of the book I believe it to be such and to therefore constitute an exception to the usual Random House practice for their published plays. The printed price $3.95 is present on the front jacket flap along with the printing code 10/66 at the bottom corner of the flap. In addition this was part of a collection in which nearly all the published plays were review copies with publisher's slips to document the fact; although there is no slip present in this copy I believe it to also be a review copy. If someone can show me evidence of a copy that states "first printing" however I will happily stand corrected. . Random House hardcover books

Its philosophy is explained by one of its members: "We serve no useful purpose. We have no place in the struggle for existence. We refuse to contribute to the evolution of the Superman. We are here on this earth entirely as spectators. It is unfortunate that in order to watch we have to eat. It is thus impossible for us to attain one hundred per cent efficiency in indolence. But we do our best. We live untidily and straggle through our days." Filmed in England in 1944 as "Give Us the Moon." . c.1940. Farrar & Rinehart hardcover books
