New York: Praeger Publishers 1978. xiii 416 pp. Publisher's cloth hardcover with gilt lettered spine and front cover. Moderate shelfwear. Internally clean. $25. Based on investigations by the Securities and Exchange Commission SEC the book explores a time when more than 400 U.S. companies admitted to making hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal or "questionable" payments. This widespread problem tarnished corporate reputations and eroded public trust in American business. The questionable payments which ran the gamut from outright bribery to smaller "facilitating payments" were made primarily to foreign government officials politicians and political parties. Payments were often designed to secure favorable actions obtain business contracts or influence foreign government policies. The scandals revealed a significant breakdown in corporate accountability systems and led to a re-examination of accounting practices. Many companies were caught using slush funds often disguised in their accounting records to make these payments. The authors' examination provides historical context for the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977 which made it illegal for U.S. companies and individuals to bribe foreign government officials. The book explores the ethical and business implications of this behavior in the years leading up to the groundbreaking legislation. unknown books

Van Leeuwen was a Dutch attorney active in the Hague and Leiden who became the assistant registrar of the Supreme Court at the Hague in 1681. His reputation derives from his studies Paratitula Iuris Novissimi 1652 Het Rooms-Hollands-Regt 1664 and the present work. First published in 1662 it is an important study of Roman law and old Dutch law with an emphasis on practical use. It was published soon after Holland achieved its independence from Spain. During this period Dutch law was a complicated mixture of local and Spanish sources which often conflicted. In this work van Leeuwen restated Dutch law by removing Spanish elements and grounding it on principles derived from Roman law. It also has interesting comparisons between Dutch law Roman law and the laws of other nations. Though never highly regarded in Holland this work was translated into the principal European languages and issued in numerous editions during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It was especially influential in South Africa where it was cited extensively and given a statutory place as a subsidiary authority in the South African Republic. unknown books

First published in 1676 Degge's Counsellor remained the preeminent practical manual for the English clergy and their legal advisors for nearly 150 years. Written by a prominent barrister and Royalist judge rather than a theologian the work is celebrated for its pragmatic secular approach to church law. It was instrumental in redefining tithes-originally a religious offering-as a strictly enforceable legal property right under common and statute law. This 1681 edition was published during a period of intense legal refinement following the Restoration. It includes substantial additions over the first edition reflecting the evolving court precedents that sought to stabilize the Church of England's financial footing. A critical feature of this edition is the "Catalogue of Dissolved Monasteries" which identified lands exempt from tithe payments-a vital reference tool for 17th and 18th-century land disputes. This copy features a notable generational provenance within a documented London legal family. The rear endleaf contains the inscription of Thomas Adlington fl. 1765 an attorney active in the mid-18th century. ref. 156588London: 4AD 1989. Three early never-issued alternate artwork proof designs for the classic 1989 album. Developed by British graphic designer Vaughan Oliver with photography by Simon Larbalestier. Unique. In 1980 Oliver and photographer Nigel Grierson formed the graphic design partnership 23 Envelope. In 1982 the duo were invited to create sleeve art for the 4AD record label by co-founder Ivo Watts-Russell. Under 23 Envelope and v23 Oliver would give 4AD one of the most acclaimed and distinguished visual identities of any record label of the 1980s and 1990s designing album art for the Cocteau Twins This Mortal Coil Dead Can Dance Colourbox and the Pixies among many others. Oliver managed the graphic design for the Pixies' entire discography during his lifetime with "Doolittle" being the most celebrated. Photographer Simon Larbalestier is best known for his collaborative work with Oliver under 23 Envelope and v23 and provided photography for all the Pixies albums helping to give the band their distinctive and opulent visual style. "Doolittle" was the first Pixies album for which Oliver and Larbalestier had access to the lyrics which "made a fundamental difference" according to Larbalestier and helped determined the photography layout and graphic style. While each of the experimental proofs presented here retain the general overall layout of the released cover each contains both stark and subtle differences. The first proof the most dramatically divergent is printed in a sharp copper with the photograph a pale yellow and the rear cover text a deep blue. The other two proofs experimenting with metallic copper and gold are both notably lighter in tone than the final art but the photograph printed in a gray green is close to Oliver's final design with the rear cover text also in gray-green as opposed to the white of the final design. The layout of the typography is also notably different in all three proofs with the band name much smaller and its accompanying grid nearly indiscernible as is the title placed discreetly above the band's name. Three extraordinary experimental proofs documenting Oliver's process in creating the exceptional art of one of the most celebrated and influential rock albums of all time. 25.25 x 13.75 inches on heavy card stock. This collection of essays covers the reception of Jeremy Bentham's legal and political thought in a variety of different countries and historical periods. Authors from around the world explore how Bentham's utilitarian program of legal and political reform was disseminated and sometimes distorted in the United States France Germany Japan Russia China Italy Spain and Australia. Themes or issues shared amongst the essays include the prominent role Etienne Dumont's famous redactions of Bentham's texts played in the early international reception of Bentham's thought the ways in which Bentham's theories of law and government both succeeded and failed to penetrate political cultures that possessed natural law leanings and relatedly the apparent philosophical plasticity of Bentham's thinking from which both liberal and authoritarian traditions have tried to profit. Together the essays offer a fresh perspective on the relationship between Bentham's legal and political thought and the global history of utilitarianism. Simon Palmer is a research student at the University of Leuphana Luneburg. His research interests include both contemporary legal philosophy as well as its history with a particular interest in Bentham's views on language morality and law. In full colour and illustrated with photos and other reproductions on nearly every page the book represents an accessible account of the short-lived but vibrant private press era of Emery Walker and its social and political context." - David Farey Forum: the Journal of Letter Exchange ".as Simon Loxley says Walker himself seems submerged in the catalogue of his achievements. Loxley's aim is to rediscover the man as well as to situate him in the political and cultural world he inhabited. Loxley is responsible for the visual style of the Hammersmith Terrace houses publicity as well as the design of his revealing and well-illustrated book on its previous owner." - Sebastian Carter Journal of the Printing Historical Society This book is an attempt to give a comprehensive sense of Emery Walker as a person along with his career and achievements in part through correspondence with important people in his life. The letters are accompanied by brief biographies of the correspondents and essays that examine some of the key stages and achievements of Walker's career. Walker was a key figure in the world of design typography and printing in the teaching and dissemination of those crafts and in the cultural landscape of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Britain. But the effects of his contributions also spread to the United States and mainland Europe and the ripple of their influence helped determine the design ethos of the twentieth century and beyond. He was called the "Universal Samaritan" his help and advice likened to a vital amenity like water and free of charge. In spite of his enormous influence Walker himself has largely remained in the shadows low-key even in the most notorious dispute in typographic history over the rights to the Doves Press type-the pronouncements and self-justifications of his former partner Thomas Cobden-Sanderson dominated the affair. Simon Loxley's category-defying and highly accessible curation of Walker's life presents him in all his dimensions. His creative and inspirational career is highlighted in separate features: the Kelmscott Press the Doves Press the Ashendene and Cranach Presses and his collaborations with Bruce Rogers: the short-lived Mall Press and the aesthetic triumph of The Odyssey of Homer. His contributions to the design and use of two Greek typeface designs Selwyn Image's Macmillan Greek and Robert Proctor's Otter Type are also examined. Interwoven with these is a selection of 143 letters spanning 60 years most never previously published that gives us a picture of Walker the man in both his professional and personal life. He seemed to "know everyone" and short biographies of the principal correspondents help contextualize the letters. The result is a fascinating picture of Emery Walker his family and friends the people he knew and the times he lived in: times of aesthetic vision social revolution dreamed and actual and world war culminating in a symbolic poignant valediction to Arts and Crafts as the shadow of another conflict loomed. The texts are accompanied by over 140 images many of them once again never before published. Simon Loxley is a graphic designer and a writer on design typography and design history. In addition to this book he is the author of Type is Beautiful: The Story of Fifty Remarkable Fonts Bodleian Library 2016 Printers Devil: The Life and Work of Frederic Warde Godine 2013 and Type: The Secret History of Letters I.B.
