1920ref. 64773Portland OR: Shaver Transportation; Sowell Studio Photos 145 1/2 3rd St. ca. 1920. Three oblong folio original silver gelatin photographs sized 14 x 9.75 in. all w/ photographer’s rubber stamp on verso two w/in negative at lower fore-edge very slight age toning minor shelfwear a couple corners creased still an excellent set of three. These scarce three large original silver gelatin photographs depict the expanding fleet of tugboats from the Shaver Transportation Company from before World War I into the Roaring 20’s. Those depicted here included the “Hercules” the “Cascades” originally built by the US Army Corps of Engineers for constructing the Cascade Locks and used by the Shaver Company until World War II; the historic “Henderson” wooden-hulled sternwheeler first built in 1901 as freight carrier and towboat operated for decades towing log rafts pushing barges and by 1950 was one of the last two wooden-hulled sternwheelers working the river and starred in the “River Queen” film in 1952; the “Sarah Dixon” another sternwheeler named for George Shaver’s wife; and the “No Wonder” originally built in Portland in 1889 from dismantled components from the 1877 Wonder and served as workhorse for the log-towing operations until retired and abandoned in 1933. Also depicted are the tugs such as the “James W” designed by Captain Delmar Shaver owned by the Shaver Transportation Co. powered by a direct-reversible 350 Atlas Diesel engine with electrically powered monkey rudder system and during the height of the Kaiser World War II shipyard boom she worked around the clock as she was built for speed and minimal wake effect eventually being retired by the company in the 1950’s. Also featured are the “Echo” which was the Shaver Transportation Co.’s first propeller-driven gasoline-powered boat as well as the large Shaver sternwheeler which later was converted into a twin-screw semi-tunnel diesel tug. Founded originally in 1880 by George Washington Shaver and partner’s as the People’s Freighting Co. with their steamboat Manzanillo the company was later incorporated in 1893 as Shaver Transportation by George with his two sons James and George and by the post-World War I era as depicted in these photos had expanded to 7 and then 10 tugs and their diesel power and scientific hull designs dominated Pacific Northwest waterways towing. Gustin 1884-1959 began as a photographer in The Dalles and then Pendleton before established as photographer and proprietor of Sowell Studio formerly Simon-Sowell Studio in 1914-1916 and operated as a photographer for the next three decades. Simon 1890-1986 became the manager for the Sowell Studio sometime in the early 1920’s and continued as professional photographer until his later retirement. 1938ref. 19859Brooklyn: International Catholic Truth Society 1938. Broadside 18-1/2" x 9". Printed recto-only on newsprint. Text in single column beneath cartoon graphic signed "Doc Rankin". Single horizontal fold; paper slightly toned and eroded at margins not approaching text; complete and Good. Right-wing broadside attacking Simon Gerson who had recently been appointed Assistant to Manhattan Borough President Stanley Isaacs. Gerson 1909-2004 was the first openly Communist politician to hold an appointed office in New York; despite vicious attacks such as this from various right-wing groups he succeeded in holding on to his post for three years. Following WW2 in which he served honorably Gerson returned to politics once again becoming embroiled in controversy when the Tammany machine blocked his appointment to fill deceased communist City Councilman Pete Cacchione's seat. The graphic reproduced from the Brooklyn "Daily Eagle" shows Gerson conducting city business while a placid Josef Stalin oversees his work from the shadows. The drawing is signed by Doc Rankin a freelance editorial cartoonist who in addition to his long service on the Eagle is widely believed to have been the real-life figure behind the anonymous "Mr. Prolific" one of the most-published illustrators of pornographic "Tijuana Bibles" in the 30s and 40s. International Catholic Truth Society unknown

1609ref. A86ACTMRTZ41Franc end al" = Amsterdam: Frederijck de Vrije" 1609. Disbound. Small 4to. Poems celebrating the truce with Spain though attributed to a former opponent of the truce with the Dutch poems in textura types and Latin marginal notes in roman. A political pamphlet in verse celebrating peace and dated less than a month before the signing of the Twelve Years' Truce between Spain and the Dutch Republic. The main poem takes the form of a "codicil" to War's "last will and testament." It recites the various legacies both good and bad that the War has left to people on both sides and even to people and countries not directly involved in the fighting. Asher mistakenly lists the present pamphlet as no. 11 in the Bye-Korf series: it was published about six months after the Bye-Korf was banned but later collectors often inserted it and the associated Testament in place of the earlier Testament which should have been Asher 26-28/10. The author place of publication and publisher given on the title-page are all word plays "Yemand van Waer-Mond" for example suggesting "someone of honest mouth." The STCN attributes the pamphlet with a query to Nierop who propagandized against peace in one of the Bye-Korf pamphlets Asher 28/37 but rejoiced in it once it came. Alden & Landis attributes the associated Testament ofte Wtersten Wille to Middelgeest. The poet's four-line verse on the back of the title-page is signed with the motto: "Yet Meer en mocht/Min en docht Niet."A nice view of popular feelings about the Truce just before it formally took effect. With some tears at the fold of the outermost bifolium and only slightly browned otherwise a very good copy.l Asher 26-28/11; Knuttel 1584; Simoni W 34; Tiele 751; OCLC WorldCat 3 copies. From the press: "For the fifth title in our series of the work of contemporary British poets we were fortunate to have the opportunity of printing an extended four-part poem by Poet Laureate emeritus Andrew Motion. He was England's Poet Laureate from 1999-2009. Writing of his work Motion says 'A Long Story assembled itself over several years into a loose sequence of four sections none of them rhymed and all are written in a very loose rambling rhythm. I began with the wish to identify certain memories in my childhood which I've always considered to be 'spots of time' - ie moments which have a self-contained interest and drama - and ended up with scenes which anticipate even predict certain moods and attitudes I have as an adult. 'To complement Motion's narrative style we turned once more to leading wood-engraver Simon Brett whose ability to tell a story in a single sinewy image we greatly admire and who cut four wood-engravings for the book.'' For this elegant book the text was hand-set in 14pt Fournier italic and printed on 170gsm Magnani mould-made paper. Brett's engravings were printed from the wood onto dampened paper. The book was bound by Rachel and Richard James. It is quarter-bound with yellow cloth on the spine with a rich dark green hand-made paper from the Larroque mill covering the boards black Canson end-papers and the title embossed in gold on the front cover. In fine condition. Measures 8 x 11 inches. Unpaginated 44 pages PRI/082823. Old School Press hardcover
