1854ref. 172481854. Currier & Ives Dreadnought and The Great Ocean Yacht Race 1857 and 1887 preserve the visual culture of nineteenth-century American ocean travel competitive sailing and popular maritime spectacle. The pair joins two related subjects: the clipper ship as a symbol of speed trade and transatlantic mobility and the ocean yacht race as public entertainment tied to wealth technology and national maritime identity. These prints belong to the broad commercial print culture through which Currier & Ives circulated images of transportation sport news and American achievement to a wide audience. Dreadnought. Currier & Ives. New York: Currier & Ives 1857. The Great Ocean Yacht Race Between the Henrietta Fleetwing and Vesta. Currier & Ives. New York: Currier & Ives 1887. Two hand-finished color lithographs each large folio with image size approximately 13.5 x 18 inches. The Dreadnought print depicts the 1854 clipper ship and includes printed details below the image recording the vessel's dimensions and carrying capacity. The Great Ocean Yacht Race shows the 1867 contest among the Henrietta Fleetwing and Vesta with printed race results below the image. Together the lithographs pair commercial maritime power with elite recreational competition. The prints offer strong visual evidence of how nineteenth-century American audiences consumed maritime speed ship design and oceanic competition as subjects of display. Both lithographs have minor creasing and closed tears along blank edges not affecting the color images; very good. A visually appealing pair of Currier & Ives maritime prints linking clipper-ship commerce with the competitive culture of ocean yacht racing. unknown

1900ref. 162288London: John Murray 1900. First and only contemporary edition of this interesting and engaging biography of "one of the most distinguished soldiers of the Tirah campaign" Nevill p. 303 described by Lord Methuen as "the best leader of men I ever saw". Increasingly uncommon on the market. John Haughton 1852-1898 was the son of Lt.-Col. John Colpoys Haughton "the staunch defender of Charikar in 1841 whose name is known but to the few serious students of Indian Frontier warfare" p. ix. In India the younger Haughton commanded the 36th Sikhs during the 1897-1898 Tirah campaign to subdue part of the Indian frontier. In the last major battle of the campaign Haughton was killed by sheer overwhelming numbers. A plaque in the chapel at Uppingham School commemorates Haughton's death "while boldly defending a position to the last against overwhelming odds". The present work also contains a detailed description of the famous engagement at Saragarhi where 21 members of Haughton's 36th Sikhs were involved in an heroic last stand against 10000 Afghans. The day is still celebrated by Sikhs and commemorated by the British and Indian armies with the Saragarhi Challenge Cup polo match. Arthur Campbell Yate 1853-1929 served for three years from 1875 with the 1st West India Regiment before transferring to the Bombay Staff Corps. He took part in the Second Anglo-Afghan War 1878-80 later serving on the Afghan Boundary Commission and Third Anglo-Burmese War 1885. He travelled extensively in Persia Central Asia 1879-81 and the Caucasus was a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and wrote several books including England and Russia Face to Face in Asia 1887 and The Army and the Press 1901. Octavo.
