1926ref. 126909Islesboro Maine: 1926. America's Cup contenders and celebrated schooners under sail An attractive album of crisply detailed amateur photographs showing some of the foremost American racing and cruising yachts of the 1920s many under full sail and identified by name. Particularly compelling are views of the 1920 America's Cup defender Resolute her rival Vanitie and several schooners designed by Nathanael Greene Herreshoff. The photographs document the Bertolet family's summer cruise in 1926 aboard Elkhorn a twin-screw motor launch built by George Lawley & Son in South Boston in 1905 and captained by Whitney B. Lowe. A typed label on the front pastedown names Wellington M. Bertolet 1881-1951 a lawyer and city solicitor of Reading Pennsylvania his wife Helen sons Frederick and Jean members of the Dives and Ferneau families and other passengers and crew. Elkhorn had attracted attention when new: Power Boat News reported in 1905 that she was the largest gasoline yacht yet seen so far up the Penobscot. The yachts identified include Harold S. Vanderbilt's 109-foot Vagrant built by Herreshoff in 1913 and a winner of the Astor and King's Cups; Queen Mab formerly Vanderbilt's first Vagrant 1910 later fitted with an early Marconi mainsail; Mariette 1916 and Mary Rose 1926 both also Herreshoff designs; and Advance built in Norway in 1925 to an innovative design by W. Starling Burgess. Further photographs show Thelma Mahapa II and Eda Mina IV. Resolute and Vanitie had competed in the American defender trials of 1914 but the Cup races were postponed by the First World War. Resolute again won the selection trials in 1920 and defeated Shamrock IV to retain the Cup. Bennett Fisher's 1928 survey of major yachts remarks on the renewed interest in the two former Cup candidates during the 1926 racing season. Landscape photograph album 140 x 185 mm. 124 original photographs 70 x 45 to 90 x 145 mm; 91 of the larger size mounted on heavy black card leaves many with ink or pencil identifications in the lower margins a few with the water tinted blue. Contemporary commercial black limp cloth post-binder album by Miles Albums front cover lettered in gilt "Photographs" black silk cord tie. Corners bumped light edge-wear minor chipping to two leaves adhesive residue from two removed photographs. Overall very good.
