1940réf. List3839Rutherford New Jersey: Garrway Co 1940. Real photo postcard measuring approximately 3 ½ x 5 ½ inches. Photograph shows a priest celebrating Mass at an outdoor altar attached to a streamlined trailer chapel with several women kneeling or seated before it. Captioned in the negative: "Chapel Car 'The Crusader of the Divine Child' destined for China" and "Go ye into the whole world and preach the Gospel to every creature. St. Luke 16.15." Divided postcard back unused printed for the Franciscan Mission Crusade 812 N. Salina Street Syracuse New York with "Help the Missions" appeal and Proverbs 19:17 quotation. Some wear and toning; very good. A real photo postcard showing the Franciscan Mission Crusade's chapel car "The Crusader of the Divine Child" described here as destined for China. The image shows a mobile Catholic altar built into a trailer with a priest vested for Mass and a small outdoor congregation gathered before him. The verso identifies the card as a mission fundraising or promotional piece issued by the Franciscan Mission Crusade of Syracuse New York. Another cataloged example of this image identifies the scene as a Catholic mobile chapel at Hingan Fu Shensi China suggesting that the trailer may have reached the mission field rather than remaining only a fundraising image produced in the United States. The combination of American fundraising address named chapel car China destination and another cataloged example located at Hingan Fu gives the card a fuller paper trail than most missionary postcards of mobile chapels. American Catholic missionaries were active in China through the first half of the twentieth century but their work was largely disrupted after the Communist victory in 1949 when foreign missionaries were expelled and Catholic institutions were reorganized under state pressure. The letter was sent via San Francisco and the SS Colorado. Charles seems to be a young bachelor making his way in the Orient and he paints a detailed picture of daily events from a Westerners perspective but no real indication of why he is there. Charles and Anna were avid letter writers this one "No. 6" for the year. He refers to Anna's letters of Dec. 29 Jan. 5 19 that were just received. He talks of his lack of a Christmas and that most people who live in Hong Kong celebrate by getting "boozy" a sport he did not relish. He "would give more for 1 pound of good tobacco than 1 barrel of the best liquor." "For a young man who has not much determination this is the worse sic place in the world. There is nothing for him to do but play billiards & drink." He responds to Anna's questions about paper suits which were made in Japan a Joss house and the custom to accept an offer of tea 'you will have one of these little cups 7 saucers handed to you.' that he will send the 'Ivory letters to you for Miss Harrington' and refers to Anna's husband George other family and an acquaintance Wiliam Blanchard a pilot who lived in Shanghai as well as the 'great fire'. "The only thing I can say of the great fire is that it is too bad - but it may improve Boston by having different planned building and streets." The Great Boston fire of 1872 was Boston's largest and one of the most costly fire-related property losses is American history. He ends by sending his love to other family members and a request for a letter from George. The SS Colorado was the largest San Francisco-Panama route liner ever to sail the Pacific. She was originally brig-rigged but was altered in San Francisco in 1866 to enter the China service. In 1867 the Pacific Mail founded the first regular steamship service across the Pacific Ocean and the Colorado became the first American liner to carry mail across the Pacific to the Orient which helped pave the way for a rapid expansion of trade between California and the Orient. 4 page folded letter on watermarked paper "Hodgkinson & Co" with writing on 3 sides 8 3/8 x 10 1/8" with original fold marks. unknown

An engraved frontispiece portrait of Johann Nieuhoff an official of the VOC and important writer and illustrator of contemporary China whose study of China was produced in 1665 by his brother Hendrick and titled 'An embassy from the East-India Company of the United Provinces to the Grand Tartar Cham emperor of China: . at his imperial city of Peking wherein the cities towns villages ports rivers &c. in their passages from Canton to Peking are ingeniously described by John Nieuhoff; '. The work was essential to European understanding of China as it was the only reliable source along with the reports of the Jesuits of information and images available at the time. The work was translated into French German Latin and English and was the first to include 150 true to life illustrations drawn by Nieuhoff himself. In 1649 he joined the East India Company first in Batavia and then in China as steward at the embassy which aspired to gain trading rights with China's southern coast. His specific duties were to observe all "farms towns palaces rivers . and other buildings" that he might encounter drawing them "in straight form and figure" as well as remains of the historical victory of the "Tartars" Manchus that brought an end to the reign of the Ming dynasty. He remained in China until 1657.
