The Development of Religious Toleration in England from the Convention of the Long Parliament to the Restoration 1640-1660: The Revolutionary Experiments and the Dominant Religious Thought. Cambridge: Harvard University Press 1938. First edition. 560 pp. Publisher's maroon gilt stamped cloth very good in a lightly worn dust jacket. Internally clean. $85. This detailed study examines how the idea of religious toleration evolved in England during the turbulent years of the English Civil War and the Interregnum. This book published in 1938 is the third volume in a larger four-volume series by Jordan covering the topic from the English Reformation to 1660. Jordan chronicles the radical and diverse religious ideas that flourished after the collapse of the pre-war Anglican system. With the removal of the monarchy and the episcopacy an unprecedented period of religious and intellectual experimentation began. The book analyzes the major ideological and religious arguments that both promoted and opposed the concept of toleration during this period. It investigates how Puritan and other non-conformist groups who initially sought freedom from the Church of England struggled with the question of whether to extend that same freedom to others. The 1640-1660 period was characterized by political and religious upheaval. The book examines the debates that took place in Parliament and among religious leaders as well as the experiences of various dissenting groups such as the Independents Baptists and Quakers. Despite some criticisms for its focus and interpretations the work is considered foundational to the study of religious toleration in England. Jordan's extensive research provides a well-sourced and comprehensive account of the events and ideas that shaped the development of religious freedom in England. unknown

Hardcover. a good sound copy with some minor soiling and age-toning to the edges of the text block very light shelfwear; the jacket has a bit of paper loss at the top of the spine very small chip at the top edge of the front panel modest edgewear with a handful of other tiny nicks. 4 B&W film stills The "George Arliss Edition" a tie-in with the 1923 silent adventure film starring the horse-faced English thespian as the Rajah of Rukh ruler of a fictional Himalayan kingdom who plays host to a trio of English visitors; his character is memorably described in one of the articles noted below as "a twisted gnomish Valentino with an evil eye for the ladies." In a somewhat unusual stage-to-page-to-screen progression this property actually began as a stage play by William Archer which had its Broadway debut in January 1921 with Arliss in the lead. Even though both the actor and the playwright were English the play was presented in New York prior to its London production. The novelized version of the play by Ms. Miln was published by the Frederick A. Stokes Company in September 1922 and that text was used for this photoplay edition published more or less concurrently with the release of the film version by Goldwyn Pictures in August 1923. All documentation related to the film credits its source as Archer's play with the screen adaptation by Forrest Halsey rather than Miln's book. The film was remade as an early talkie in 1930 with Arlist again playing the Rajah. Laid in to this copy are two different pieces about the film: a two-page writeup by critic Mary Beth Crain focusing as much on Arliss and his career as on the film itself; and a page about the film torn out of a program book from the UCLA Festival of Preservation at which a restored version was presented. .
