Hunt-class ALDENHAM was the last British-manned destroyer sunk in WWII. On her maiden voyage in 1942 she assisted in the destruction of U-567 before entering the Mediterranean where she spent the rest of the war. Service includes Operations VIGOROUS and STONEHENGE, at least fourteen Malta convoys, Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and the Dodecanese. At the bombardment of Karlobag batteries she struck a mine and was lost with heavy loss of life. The author served aboard her from the beginning to mid-1944. Stuart-Menteth was her commanding officer from March 1942 to September 1943.
