2019New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 78 p. The presence of Kosovar Turks: A relation of identity and education. After the collapse of the communist system in Yugoslavia the nationalistic aspirations of Serbs and Albanians were apparently strengthened. In line with this their embracing of a distinct ethnic also increased. Consequently, it is worth considering whether Kosovar Turks' appeals to identity appeals have changed or not? Kosovar Turks were also exposed to pressures during the 1990s and this could have affected their nationalistic appeals. Thus, Turkish identity aspirations might have strengthened between 1992 and 2010. In order to test it, I will analyse the number of the students who participated in Turkish language education in Kosovo throughout the period mentioned above. One assumption here is that the number of the students who follow Turkish language education in schools is proof of a commitment to Turkish identity but I see no strong reason to doubt this assumption. Changes in the number of the students then should reflect the level of commitment to Turkish identity.

1994The Fall of Yugoslavia tells the whole, true story of the Balkan Crisis-and the ensuing war-for those around the world who have watched the battle unfold with a mixture of horror, dread, and confusion. When Croatia and Slovenia declared their independence in June 1991, peaceful neighbors of four decades took up arms against each other once again and a savage war flared in the Balkans. The underlying causes go back to business left unfinished by both the Second and First World Wars. In this acclaimed book, now revised and updated with a new chapter on the Dayton Accords and the subsequent U.S. involvement, Misha Glenny offers a sobering eyewitness chronicle of the events that rekindled the violent conflict, a lucid and impartial analysis of the politics behind them, and incisive portraits of the main personalities involved. Above all, he shows us the human realities behind the headlines and puts in its true, historical context one of the most ferocious civil wars of our time.258p. bibliography, index. 2011The Double Headed Eagle, the symbol of the Late Byzantine Empire, speaks eloquently to the worldview of the Byzantines, whose Empire looked both to the East and to the West, but never was-or is-really part of either. At its apogee, the Byzantine Empire was the highest civilization in Europe-the Center. This Double Headed Eagle is cherished by the Balkan Orthodox successors to Byzantium, and versions of it grace the national flags of Serbia, Montenegro, and even Albania. Encroached upon by both the Muslim East and the Catholic West, the Byzantine Eagle succumbed, only to emerge, in a state of arrested development, after several hundred years of Turkish or Western Catholic rule. This stunted progression emerges time and again in the civic culture, architecture, economics, and politics of the region, and has direct relevance on political and economic issues today, including Greece's present financial malaise, and the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 1990s. Traveling through this Ex-Byzantine zone, Billinis offers history, architecture, personal experiences, and numerous anecdotes to expound on key central themes. First, that the Balkan Orthodox nations form a common culture and virtual commonwealth, while still maintaining ethnic, geographical, and linguistic diversity. Without understanding this common Byzantine base, it is impossible to appreciate and to understand the region. Second, the common experience of Turkish rule, while preserving Byzantine culture and insulating the Orthodox religion from Catholic encroachment, did so by cutting off Byzantine Europe from economic, political, cultural, and civic development in progress in Western Europe. The states that emerged from this condition were-and are-ill prepared to contribute and to compete in modern Europe, and in a globalized world Print on Demand
