1999réf. 38993Harvard University Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. Hardcover. Gift inscription from editors to Carolyn Dewald on ffep. Very minor shelfwear.; Athens in the fifth century B. C. Offers a striking picture: the first democracy in history; the first empire created and ruled by a Greek city; and a flourishing of learning philosophical thought and visual and performing arts so rich as to leave a remarkable heritage for Western civilization. To what extent were these three parallel developments interrelated An international group of fourteen scholars expert in different fields explores here the ways in which the fifth-century "cultural revolution" depended on Athenian democracy and the ways it was influenced by the fact that Athens was an imperial city. The authors bring to this analysis their individual areas of expertise--in the visual arts poetry and drama philosophy archaeology religion and social economic and political history--and a variety of theoretical approaches. The product of a colloquium at Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington D. C. Democracy Empire and the Arts in Fifth-Century Athens sheds new light on a much debated question that has wide implications. Drawing on archaeological findings and on an unusual combination of Greek and Egyptian evidence Dorothy Thompson examines the city's economic life and the character of its multi-racial society in the era from Alexander to Augustus. Memphis under the Ptolemies will interest students of intercultural relations and will be essential reading for Egyptologists papyrologists and historians of the Hellenistic world including those concerned with religion. The relationship of the native population with the Greek-speaking immigrants is illustrated in Thompson's analysis of the position of Memphite priests within the Ptolemaic state. Egyptians continued to control mummification and the cult of the dead; the undertakers of the Memphite necropolis were barely touched by things Greek. The cult of the living Apis bull also remained primarily Egyptian; yet on death the bull deified as Osorapis became Sarapis for the Greeks. Within this god's sacred enclosure the Sarapieion is found a strange amalgam of Greek and Egyptian cultures. . 1989. 0691035938 . Princeton University Press hardcover
