1985rif. 5536Cambridge University Press. Very Good- with no dust jacket. First Edition. Hardcover. Corners are bumped. Top of spine bumped. Small black 'J' stamped to titlepage.; This volume contains a selection of the more important and influential of Professor F. W. Walbank's occasional papers. Published over a period of fifty years they cover a wide range of classical subjects. Three deal with the role of nationality in the Greco-Roman world and with the constitutional character of Greek federal states. Others are concerned with problems of third- and second-century Roman history. Eight papers treat the antecedents of so-called 'tragic history' speeches in ancient historians and several aspects of Polybius' work. Finally the selection includes Professor Walbank's detailed discussion of the chronology of Ptolemy IV's death and the accession of Ptolemy Epiphanes. A full bibliography of the author's publications concludes the volume.; 400 pages . 1985. 052130752X . Cambridge University Press hardcover

2019rif. S7237Гръцко-църковноÑлавÑнÑки речник Sofia 2019. In Greek and Old-Slavonic. Hard cover 29 cm 912 pp. 14625 entries; net weight 2670 gr. ISBN: 978-954-770-451-0. In 2012 the brotherhood of Zographou Monastery published the 2nd volume of the Church Slavonic Dictionary compiled by A. Bonchev. Shortly after the idea of creating a reverse Greek-Church Slavonic dictionary matured and the brotherhood turned to Prof. Christov. Compiling such a dictionary is a long overdue necessity. Priests theological liturgists and all those who are interested in the history of the liturgical language which we still use in the church today need it. Patrologists dogmatists and historians of philosophy studying terminological word usages in the field of their interests also feel the need for such a dictionary. It is also necessary for Slavic linguists. Such a dictionary is also needed for the study of medieval translations from Greek. Often it is not possible to understand the exact meaning of the text without a comparison with the Greek terms being translated. 1999rif. 38993Harvard University Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. Hardcover. Gift inscription from editors to Carolyn Dewald on ffep. Very minor shelfwear.; Athens in the fifth century B. C. Offers a striking picture: the first democracy in history; the first empire created and ruled by a Greek city; and a flourishing of learning philosophical thought and visual and performing arts so rich as to leave a remarkable heritage for Western civilization. To what extent were these three parallel developments interrelated An international group of fourteen scholars expert in different fields explores here the ways in which the fifth-century "cultural revolution" depended on Athenian democracy and the ways it was influenced by the fact that Athens was an imperial city. The authors bring to this analysis their individual areas of expertise--in the visual arts poetry and drama philosophy archaeology religion and social economic and political history--and a variety of theoretical approaches. The product of a colloquium at Harvard's Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington D. C. Democracy Empire and the Arts in Fifth-Century Athens sheds new light on a much debated question that has wide implications. The book is illustrated and enriched by a comprehensive bibliography on the subject.; Center for Hellenic Studies Colloquia 2; 512 pages; Signed by Editors . 1999. 0674197690 .
