1983There has not been any previous collection of relevant ancient sources in a form suitable for students or specialists in disciplines such as Modern or Social and Economic History unfamiliar with the classical languages - indeed, there does not even exist such a collection for specialists in Classics. -- This selection provides readers interested in ancient slavery with translations in contemporary English of those major texts from Greek and Latin literature to which modern scholarship constantly refers, as well as a small sample of the epigraphical and other non-literary material. -- Cross-references, Bibliography, and a detailed Index are provided to make it particularly suitable for use by School and University classes. Although it is intended as a supplement and not a substitute for a systematic treatment of the subject, and the author s interpretative comment is kept to a minimum, the material is arranged with introductions bringing out the significance of each of the chosen passages. 283p, map incdex Book
2003For thousands of years, and in many different cultures, cities, and states, individuals have consulted oracles in time of need. In this fascinating exploration of the history and enduring popularity of oracles, Michael Wood examines how they are interpreted and why.The inherent ambiguity of many oracular pronouncements and the ingenuity and tendentiousness of many readings of them form the basis for Woods analyses of oracles, both real and imagined. Using examples from actual oracles at Delphi, Dodona, and in pre-Hispanic America to fictional-but influential-oracles in literature from Oedipus to Macbeth, Wood combines storytelling and commentary to provide an entertaining and concise account of humanitys persistent faith in signs. He also looks at later instances of oracles, arguing that consultations have evolved in many ways over the years, and that echoes and survivals of old practices in modern literature and popular culture.continue to exert an important influence over human civilization. Lively, engaging, and remarkably revealing, The Road to Delphi shows an ancient art at work in many times and places, and invites us to think again about the ways in which we deal with our longing for the certainties we know we cant have.271p. bibliography. index Book

1991The scene is Paris, sometime after the 1967 military coup in Greece. Eleni, together with a group of her friends and fellow political exiles, finds herself working as an extra in a French film: The Horror Train. It is not the first time Eleni has been caught up in a deadly drama, nor is it her first ride on a "horror train." As the director waves his arms, shouting directions and re-shouting the sequence, Eleni's mind wanders to her first train ride: "Athens-Piraeus. My first big trip by train. - You're Eleni? I'm Achilles. They don't ask which Achilles. One name is enough." For the rest of her life, Eleni will be "Achilles' Fiancee," fiancee of the guerilla leader, the brave, handsome kapetanios whose code-name is Achilles. In the demonstrations against the German occupiers of Greece, in prison where she waits for a death sentence during the post-war persecution of suspected leftists, in exile in Tashkent where the exiled Greek communists fight amongst themselves, and finally in Paris. But somewhere along the way Eleni becomes an indepentent character with a mind of her own. As she begins to doubt the slogans that she fought for when she was a blind follower of leaders like her fiance. Eleni involves us in her own private world of self-discovery. It is a woman's world, where human warmth and friendships matter more than abstract ideals. The Greek word for a novel is mythistorema, a word that combines "myth" and "history." In her story of a young woman's struggle to survive through an extraordinary period of Greek history Alki Zei has woven the threads of her own quasi-mythical life into the stuff of history. The result is a compelling and beautiful novel that opens a new window on modern Greek history.374p. Book
