1977This biography of one of the nineteenth century's most dazzling women is also a dramatic and exciting historical story set against a background of glittering cities and filled with a cast of fascinating characters. Jane Digby, born in 1807, was the daughter of a respected English noble family. At seventeen she married Lord Ellenborough (later the British Viceroy of India), but after just four years she left him for an Austrian prince - a separation that led to one of England's most scandalous divorce cases. That relationship was not to last long, however. From her prince Jane went on to the court of King Ludwig of Bavaria. Next she married a baron in Ludwig's court, only to leave him for the Count Spiridion Theotocky Greek count and, later, an Albanian brigand, Christodoulos Hadjipetros. In her forties she settled at last in a long and satisfying marriage to a Bedouin Sheik living half the year in Damascus and half the year in the desert. 268p. plates bibliography, index. Book

1983Moving personal testimony of the way the Jews were deported from Greece to concentration camps during the Nazi occupation. Errikos Sevillias was born in Athens in 1901 into a Sephardic family. He learned how to work in leather as a child and opened his own leather workshop when he was 16. From 1919 until 1923 he served in the Greek army, for three years fighting in Asia Minor. After the war he reopened his workshop, married, and had a daughter. Life, as he writes, "went along well" until he experienced "an inexplicable and unexpected great adventure," meaning Auschwitz. Errikos Sevillias was killed in Athens by a motorcycle in 1974, when he was 73 years old. The manuscript of this book was found among his papers after he died. He describes the appalling events at Auschwitz with extraordinary calm, saying merely that he couldn't understand "what they wanted in doing such an unjust and evil thing." His simple statements of events give the clearest possible image of the indescribable. The manuscript was translated by Nikos Stavroulakis, who also has provided an extremely useful historical outline of the Jewish presence in Greece with a description of the occupation and final solution. 125p.+ plates Book
1964A journey around Greece reflected in the words of writers, journalists and poets from all places and periods. "Travellers, poets, artists, even scholars, still go to Greece in search of something they feel that no land quite offers them. Partly no doubt this is a by-product of the enormous prestige the world of ancient Greece acquired subsequent to the Renaissance; partly, too, it is due to the sheer physical beauty with which Greece presents one at practically every step. For Philip Sherrard the enigma of Greece was virtually a lifelong preoccupation. In this anthology he explores its various aspects through the writings of those who over the centuries have found in Greece not simply an object of study or a romantic haven but a challenge, an incitement and a reciprocity that have stirred the wellsprings of both heart and imagination".291p. plates. bibliography. index. 1971Shelfwear to book. Faint creasing to wraps. Spine sunned. Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). Light pencilling to a few pages. ; Xxii, 364pp, illustrated. The Africans who came to ancient Greece and Italy participated in an important chapter of classical history. Although evidence indicated that the alien dark- and black-skinned people were of varied tribal and geographic origins, the Greeks and Romans classified many of them as Ethiopians. In an effort to determine the role of black people in ancient civilization, Mr. Snowden examines a broad span of Greco-Roman experience--from the Homeric era to the age of Justinian--focusing his attention on the Ethiopians as they were known to the Greeks and Romans. The author dispels unwarranted generalizations about the Ethiopians, contending that classical references to them were neither glorifications of a mysterious people nor caricatures of rare creatures. Mr. Snowden has probed literary, epigraphical, papyrological, numismatic, and archaeological sources and has considered modern anthropological and sociological findings on pertinent racial and intercultural problems. He has drawn directly upon the widely scattered literary evidence of classical and early Christian writers and has synthesized extensive and diverse material. Along with invaluable reference notes, Mr. Snowden has included over 140 illustrations which depict the Negro as the Greeks and Romans conceived of him in mythology and religion and observed him in a number of occupations--as servant, diplomat, warrior, athlete, and performer, among others. Presenting an exceptionally comprehensive historical description of the first major encounter of Europeans with dark and black Africans, Mr. Snowden found that the black man in a predominantly white society was neither romanticized nor scorned--that the Ethiopian in classical antiquity was considered by pagan and Christian without prejudice. ; 364 pages
