Rare and important early map of Cyprus, which first appeared in Badouin's Histoire des Chevaliers de l'Ordre de St. Iean de Hierusalem . . . . published in Paris in 1629.This is the first French edition by Pierre de Boissat (1603-1662) and Jean Baudoin, the great history of the Order of Malta in three parts by Giacomo Bosio (1544-1627). It originally appeared in Italian, in Rome in 1621. Born in Chiavari to a noble Piedmontese family, Bosio was a brother of service of the Order of Malta. In 1587 he was appointed representative of the Order in Rome, where he composed his work on the history of the island of Malta, in the form of a manuscript. This remarkable early map, engraved by Raignauld (or Raigniauld), provides a remarkably topographical and visual depiction of Cyprus during the period when the the Order of St. John was actively involved in the defense and preservation of the region and the assistance of pilgrims to the Holy Land. Among the more notable features, the Karpasia Cape (St. Andreas) is considerable shorten. A very interesting map which substantially exaggerates the size of Nicosia, Famagusta and Limassol, in order to illustrate plans of these towns and their fortifcations.Beginning in about 1100 AD, during the first Crusade, the Order of St. John of Malta worked actively in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Holy Land to protect and preserve the safe passage of pilgrims to the region and safeguard the region from non-Christian invaders and occupiers. The island of Cyprus became one of the most important strongholds of the Order.Copperplate, in fine condition. Dimensioni 550/520x365. Woodcut, 1482. Magnificent proof, printed on contemporary laid paper, in beautiful contemporary colouring, minimal restoration at center fold perfectly executed, otherwise in excellent condition. Very rare map on trapezoid projections, from the edition of 1486 of the Geographia of Ulm. Donnus Nicolaus Germanus was a cartographer of German origin active in Florence in the second half of the fifteenth century. Its origins are unknown, but the name Donnus, short for Dominus, suggests that it is probably a Benedictine native of Reichenbach. A pioneer in cartography, he devoted himself to the study of the Latin translation of Ptolemy's Geographia curated by Jacopo Angelo. In 1466 Germanus (Nicolaus Laurentii), who worked in Florence as cosmographer, appeared in a vision to Duke of Ferrara Borso d'Este, the manuscript of a Geographia. In 1468 Nicolaus produced his third edition of the Geographia, this time moving to the north of Scandinavia, Greenland and Iceland in the North West, at the same latitude. Starting from the maps of this third version of Nicolaus, were made the printed editions of the Geographia of Ulm in 1482 and 1486. This is the first editions printed outside Italy. The work contains 32 maps, of which five are not derived from the Ptolemaic, all made, unlike the Italian versions, in woodcut. The woodcuts are by Johannes Schnitzer of Arnheim. The work is considered as the most elaborate and important edition of the Geographia, because for the first time were added some maps of recent construction, which served as a comparison with the Ptolemaic. The next reprint of 1486, was published by Reger, who acquired the matrices in 1484 by Holle. The plates were reprinted without material changes; the only change is the text on the reverse of the map (where the decoration is omitted) and the title of each, added to the top of the map. The edition of Reger for the first time introduces the Registrum alphabeticum and De locis et mirabili bus mundi, which will become popular enough to be included in subsequent editions of Ptolemy to Rome in 1490 and 1507/8.A magnific example. Superbo esemplare a pieni margini, freschissimo. ''Trésor d'érudition grècque...'' (Renouard). . Cfr. 2015Smyrna, one of the wealthiest cities and the most advanced civilizations in the Middle East (present-day Turkey) with a unique mixture of many nationalities-Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Turkish, European, and American-perished into ashes in September 1922. The Smyrniots became victims through the orders of Mustafa Ataturk, who was responsible for one of the largest purges of humanity known to man. This eradication led to the loss of 3.5 million Greek and Armenian Orthodox Christians who had occupied Asia Minor since the time of Alexander the Great. In September 1922, Ataturk led his troops into Smyrna (now Izmir), a predominantly Greek Christian City that was known as the City of Infidels to the Turks. The Turks then proceeded to indulge in an orgy of pillage, rape, and slaughter. This City of Infidels was cleansed and destroyed and with it the last hub of Christians in Turkey. The Whispering Voices of Smyrna is proof of the horrible atrocities the Turks, whether private citizens or government officials, committed by plundering, torturing, mutilating, burning alive, and massacring women, children, and aged people. The book details these brutal acts that were decided, planned, and directed by the Turkish central authorities and were aimed at cleansing lands under Turkish control of non-Muslim citizens. The Whispering Voices of Smyrna combines history and storytelling so that readers understand how the decision by government and military leaders of the victorious Allied powers affected the people of Smyrna. Through the eyes of the Samithakis family, one lives the cataclysmic events that determined the fate of Asia Minor following World War I. The Samithakis family lived a life of luxury among the different nationalities in Smyrna, until the Turks forced them to flee with other Greek, Armenian and European residents of Smyrna. In the course of their struggle to save themselves from the fire, the massacres, rapes, mutilations and plundering, they lost one another and became refugees, beggars and exiles. The reader also lives through the stages of destruction of a civilization centered on the once-thriving and beloved city of Smyrna. 350p.
2013(New - will be sent to you direct from the publisher in Greece) Translated by Liadain Sherrard, Zissimos Lorenzatos (1915-2004), essayist, thinker and poet, was arguably Greece's most significant man of letters in the twentieth century. In the Aegean Notebooks, a record of his observations and reflections while sailing among the Greek islands in the 1970s and 1980s, the special quality of his literary and philosophical gifts, and of the man himself, are vividly present. Along with everything a mariner yearns to bring ashore, all he has felt and experienced at sea with the wake of the boat unfurling behind him, Lorenzatos brings us in addition a lifetime's learning and contemplation. For him, life, and the living of it, was of the essence. As he observes in his foreword to these notebooks: '. . . life itself writes nothing, it erases everything that is written about it, and simply, irreplaceably lives, like the inaccessible "well of water springing up".' 138p. map
2008During the classical age of Greece, Herodotus wrote the first history text. But what he created was much more than this. Informed by his own travels, his historical work digresses more than it chronicles, with tales of the lands and peoples he visited. In The Way of Herodotus , intrepid travel historian Justin Marozzi retraces the footsteps of Herodotus through the Mediterranean and Middle East, examining his 2,500-year-old observations about the cultures and places he visited, and finding echoes of his legacy reverberating to this day. It is a lively yet thought-provoking excursion into the world of Herodotus, with the man who invented history ever present, guiding the narrative with his discursive spirit.348p. illus bibliography.index
