2000"At the end of the twentieth century people spoke as if the Balkans had plagued Europe forever." "Mark Mazower dispels current Western cliches and replaces stereotypes with an account of how mountains, empires and religions have shaped their inhabitants' lives. As a bridge between Europe and Asia the Balkans has been exposed to a constant incursion of nomadic peoples across the centuries. Mountain ranges made farming hard and political control almost impossible and allowed small communities to live side by side through to the end of the twentieth century. Empires based on religion not ethnicity shaped customs and beliefs in ways that did not entirely vanish with the coming of modernity." A short but well researched introduction to the complex and always compelling history of the Balkans. 160p. bibliography. index Book

1992"This new SELECTED POEMS replaces an earlier selection of work by James Merrill entitled From the First Nine (1982), now out of print; it includes 121 poems taken from that work and from Late Settings (1985), but it excludes the long narrative poem The Changing Light at Sandover, which is republished simultaneously in a separate volume. Together the two give solid definition to a body of poetic work that must be accounted among the finest in English of our time. 1978"The Prytaneion was a structure central to the civic life of the ancient Greek city-state. In it was housed the hearth of Hestia with its eternal fire symbolizing the well-being of the state. To it were invited distinguished foreign visitors for meals; citizens who had performed some special service to the state were also entertained there. The prytaneion was the 'home' of the state and the architectural manifestation of its life. The obvious ubiquity and importance of the prytaneion in antiquity is not reflected in the pages of modern scholarship, largely because only two structures have been excavated that can be firmly so identified. In this book Mr. Miller seeks to define the functions and the architectural form of the prytaneion by assembling and analyzing historical and epigraphic references to it. His analysis yields explicit references to various architectural parts of the prytaneion as well as a definition of the function of the building from which other architectural elements can be extrapolated. It provides a set of architectural elements essential to any prytaneion and usable as criteria of identification for excavated structures. This book is intended to serve both as a reference work for those interested in ancient civic life and civic architecture and as a guide to investigators of ancient cities still to be excavated."-258p.+ Plates,.illus bibliography index. 2000"Shortly before the successful launch of the "Olympias" a reconstructed Greek warship, the first edition of "The Athenian Trireme" was published, providing historical and technical background to the reconstruction of the ship in a Greek shipyard. Since then 5 seasons of experimental trials have been conducted on the ship under oar and sail, and the lessons learned have been supplemented by historical, scientific and physiological research over the last 15 years. for this second edition the text has been recast and a number of substantive changes have been made in the light of the sea trials and new research. In addition there is an entirely new chapter which describes the trials of Olympias in detail, reports the performance figures obtained and outlines the changes which the authors would wish to incorporate in any second reconstruction. There are 19 new illustrations, including 11 photographs of Olympias at sea demonstrating features of the design which could only be represented by drawings in the first edition. 319p. illus.bibliography.index Book
1989Translation of the autobiography of Elizabeth Moutzan - Martinegou (1801-1832) who was the first woman novelist in modern Greece, but who never saw her work published in her lifetime. The "Autobiography" is of a young woman of the bourgeoisie in the Ionian Islands [Zakynthos] not able to take part in the intellectual life of the town but forced to live in seclusion in her father's house What is remarkable is that she taught herself to write in Greek, Italian and French at a time when girls were not given any education except in domestic skills. 1993"Within the space of three centuries, up to the great Persian invasion of 480BC, Greece was transformed from a simple peasant society into a sophisticated civilization which dominated the shores of the Mediterranean from Spain to Syria and from the Crimea to Egypt - a culture whose achievements in the fields of art, science, philosophy and politics were to establish the canons of the Western world. The author of this book places this development in the context of Mediterranean civilization, providing an account of the transformation that launched Western culture.
