1961Description of the encounter in 1941 between the Royal Navy and the Italian Fleet off Cape Matapan, Greece during WW II. "In March 1941 Britain faced the Axis powers alone. Her army was still in disarray after Dunkerque, her fleet was stretched to the uttermost. It was in this context that, 100 miles off Cape Matapan in Greece, there was fought an action in which the Italian fleet was so signally defeated that it never voluntarily offered battle again so long as the war lasted. The engagement, the first major fleet action since Jutland a quarter of a century earlier, was of historical significance for two reasons; it was the first time carrier-borne aircraft had played a vital role, and the first time that the use of radar was of preponderant importance in a large-scale fleet action. Here is an account of Matapan which, illustrated by unfamiliar action photographs, will satisfy the expert no less than it will engross the general reader." 183p. plates.index Book

1976ENDIn 1821, in the geographically small but culturally and historically rich country of Greece, a revolution began to overturn four terrible centuries of slavery the Greeks had endured under the Ottoman Turks. Harry Mark Petrakis's historical novel The Hour of the Bell recalls the first year of the revolt. Petrakis provides a panoramic view of the conflict through the stories of a variety of characters, including a village priest grief-stricken over the killing of his Turkish neighbors; a guerilla captain leading a band of wild mountain fighters against the Turkish garrisons; the wife of Prince Petrobey of the Mani, embittered by the fighting that takes the lives of her sons; a sea captain commanding the smaller Greek brigs in brilliant forays against the larger Turkish frigates; and a scribe to the legendary General Kolokotronis. Each character provides a defining perspective on the small but fierce conflict that altered the course of European history. " ...tales of barbarity ,of stunning cruelty and heroism, of compassion, love, sacrifice, jealousy, ambition and betrayal-on both sides of the conflict." 359p. Maps on end papers Book

1994"The Pan Principle is the story of a woman's travels in search of a variety of sites sacred to the god Pan in Greece. Pan, half-goat, half-man, is the only god who is said by the ancients to have died. The mystery of his supposed death is discussed as the various shrines and areas connected to him are examined. His earliest territory was the little-visited province of Arcadia. From there his worship and reputation spread with Greek and Roman culture. Pan's appeal has always been an enduring one, both to his worshipers and later writers who have identified him with a variety of figures" 305p. bibliography. index Book

1993"In the dramatic monologues that make up The Fourth Dimension -e specially those based on the grim history of Mycenae and its royal protagonists - the celebrated modern Greek poet Yannis Ritsos presents a timeless poetic paradigm of the condition of Greece, past and present. The volume also contains a group of modern narratives, including the famous, and much-anthologized, "Moonlight Sonata." Ritsos, rightly, regarded the The Fourth Dimension as his finest achievement. It is now presented to English speaking readers for the first time in its entirety." 326p. notes Book
