Very light shelfwear to DJ else fine.; 184 pages; Why does a power expand and become an empire Writing in the early years of the Peloponnesian War Herodotus gave Athens full credit for saving Greece from Persia but also identified the city's expansion as a new manifestation of imperialist aggression. In this skillful analysis of Herodotus' intellectual world J.A.S. Evans combines historical anthropological and literary techniques to show how the war affected not only the great thinker's view of Persian aggression and of the people involved in it but also the shape of the Histories themselves. The first essay discusses Herodotus' investigation of imperialism and the second finds the beginnings of biography in his descriptions of individuals particularly in his well-crafted portrait of Cyrus. The third essay describes the "Father of History" as a collector and evaluator of local oral stories sources for the written work that was destined by its scope and unifying plan to introduce a new genre. Evans draws analogies between Herodotus' methods and those of oral historians in other cultures particularly in precolonial Africa. He also explores comparisons between Herodotus in Egypt and sixteenth- and seventeenth-century European ethnologists in the Americas. . 1991. 0691068712 . Princeton University Press hardcover

1990rif. 9289J. C. Gieben. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Hardcover. Dust-soiling to top of textblock. Some foxing to endpapers and DJ. Small closed tear 1cm to upper corner of DJ.; Philosophica Vol. 3; 521 pages; According to Aristotle philosophy had come into being in the VIth century with Thales just as a mere disinterested pursuit of truth a curiosity for great problems those eventually called "metaphysical" ones which were substantially identical with those which Aristotle himself and his school were now raising. This abstract reading is very similar to that which views Greek poets as inspired by "eternal beauty" or by "art's for art sake" and which is nowadays completely discredited and given up by scholars of the history of literature. Against this view the present text proposes a new reading of the "archaic" presocratic scientists: in fact it is about those "sages" who lived on the boundaries of the Greek-speaking world before the concentration of such people in Periclean Athens. They were closely linked to their native towns Miletus Ephesus Croto Vele Acragas where they held high office; here there oral teaching and the public reading of their texts were followed closely by their fellow citizens. Thus the picture of the "cosmic republic" arises: to the "cosmic monarchy" of Homer and Hesiod the mythical world with Zeus as the king gods as the ministers and nature as the subject a different mythical world succeeds. Here the earth the sea the sky the human body and generally the "existing thing" all behave like isonomic "republican" towns or like the governing body of these towns. Philosophy will arise later in Athens of the Vth century. . 1990. 9070265559 . J. C. Gieben hardcover

1992rif. 10031Cambridge University Press. Fine. Softcover. The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation from 1952 onwards of the first Greek establishment in the West Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 200 pages . 1992. 0521421640 . 1995rif. 8441E. J. Brill. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. Unwrapped in plastic.; Mnemosyne Vol Suppl. 145; 487 pages; This work surveys available evidence on Athenian settlements and settlers of the fourth century BC calling several conventional interpretations about them into question through a rigorous preference for evidence over speculation. Three chapters trace a chronology of events relating to the settlements examining their personnel collectively statistically and individually and discussing evidence for their political economic and religious institutions. Long appendices establish improved texts of numerous inscriptions relevant to the topic and provide several kinds of data on more than 1000 definite probable or possible settlers. This text is intended to be of use to students of Attic political institutions epigraphy and prosopography and of fourth-century-BC Greek history. . 1995. 9004099913 . E. J. Brill hardcover

Minor bumping to base of spine else Fine.; This volume contains a selection of the more important and influential of Professor F. W. Walbank's occasional papers. Published over a period of fifty years they cover a wide range of classical subjects. Three deal with the role of nationality in the Greco-Roman world and with the constitutional character of Greek federal states. Others are concerned with problems of third- and second-century Roman history. Eight papers treat the antecedents of so-called 'tragic history' speeches in ancient historians and several aspects of Polybius' work. Finally the selection includes Professor Walbank's detailed discussion of the chronology of Ptolemy IV's death and the accession of Ptolemy Epiphanes. A full bibliography of the author's publications concludes the volume.; 400 pages . 1985. 052130752X . Cambridge University Press hardcover
