1984rif. 7331Cambridge University Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. Very light bump to bottom of spine else Fine. DJ spine slightly sunned.; 310 pages; The district of Epiros in north-western Greece became an independent province following the Fourth Crusade and the dismemberment of the Byzantine Empire by the Latins in 1204. It retained its independence despite the recovery of Constantinople by the Greeks in 1261. Each of its rulers acquired the Byzantine titles of Despot from which the term Despotate was coined to describe their territory. They preserved their autonomy partly by seeking support from their foreign neighbours in Italy. The fortunes of Epiros were thus affected by the expansionist plans of the Angevin kings of Naples and the commercial interests of Venice. Until 1318 it was governed by direct descendants of its Byzantine founder. Thereafter it was taken over first by the Italian family of Orsini then conquered by the Serbians infiltrated by the Albanians and appropriated by an Italian adventurer Carlo Tocco. Like the rest of Byzantium and eastern Europe it was ultimately absorbed into the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century. The Despotate of Epiros illuminates part of Byzantine history and of the history of Greece in the Middle Ages. . 1984. 0521261902 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

2010rif. 7445Franz Steiner Verlag. Fine with no dust jacket. Hardcover. Historia - Einzelschriften 217; 236 pages; English summary: The contrast between monarchical and republican constitution is one of the key factors of political processes and discourses in ancient communities. However the sharp dichotomy between republic and monarchy at least according to present published research seems to more closely back the needs of those groups backing Republican orders than was actually the case in reality. The aim of this volume is to develop an interpretive model that takes the openness of dynamics and development of such processes seriously. It is not enough to purely reconstruct historical causalities. Instead individual examples from Greek and Roman history are used to study the risk posed by the respective populations' steps toward stabilization in close connection with their potential for political transformation. German text. . 2010. 3515097821 . 2001rif. 7041The Johns Hopkins University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. Very minor shelfwear to DJ.; 208 pages; In 404 BCE the Peloponnesian War finally came to an end when the Athenians starved into submission were forced to accept Sparta's terms of surrender. Shortly afterwards a group of thirty conspirators with Spartan backing "the Thirty" overthrew the democracy and established a narrow oligarchy. Although the oligarchs were in power for only thirteen months they killed more than 5 percent of the citizenry and terrorized the rest by confiscating the property of some and banishing many others. Despite this brutality members of the democratic resistance movement that regained control of Athens came to terms with the oligarchs and agreed to an amnesty that protected collaborators from prosecution for all but the most severe crimes. The war and subsequent reconciliation of Athenian society has been a rich field for historians of ancient Greece. From a rhetorical and ideological standpoint this period is unique because of the extraordinary lengths to which the Athenians went to maintain peace. In Remembering Defeat Andrew Wolpert claims that the peace was "negotiated and constructed in civic discourse" and not imposed upon the populace. Rather than explaining why the reconciliation was successful as a way of shedding light on changes in Athenian ideology Wolpert uses public speeches of the early fourth century to consider how the Athenians confronted the troubling memories of defeat and civil war and how they explained to themselves an agreement that allowed the conspirators and their collaborators to go unpunished. Encompassing rhetorical analysis trauma studies and recent scholarship on identity memory and law Wolpert's study sheds new light on a pivotal period in Athens' history. . 2001. 0801867908 .
