2001Best.-Nr. 7041The Johns Hopkins University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. Very minor shelfwear to DJ.; 208 pages; In 404 BCE the Peloponnesian War finally came to an end when the Athenians starved into submission were forced to accept Sparta's terms of surrender. Shortly afterwards a group of thirty conspirators with Spartan backing "the Thirty" overthrew the democracy and established a narrow oligarchy. Although the oligarchs were in power for only thirteen months they killed more than 5 percent of the citizenry and terrorized the rest by confiscating the property of some and banishing many others. Despite this brutality members of the democratic resistance movement that regained control of Athens came to terms with the oligarchs and agreed to an amnesty that protected collaborators from prosecution for all but the most severe crimes. The war and subsequent reconciliation of Athenian society has been a rich field for historians of ancient Greece. From a rhetorical and ideological standpoint this period is unique because of the extraordinary lengths to which the Athenians went to maintain peace. In Remembering Defeat Andrew Wolpert claims that the peace was "negotiated and constructed in civic discourse" and not imposed upon the populace. Rather than explaining why the reconciliation was successful as a way of shedding light on changes in Athenian ideology Wolpert uses public speeches of the early fourth century to consider how the Athenians confronted the troubling memories of defeat and civil war and how they explained to themselves an agreement that allowed the conspirators and their collaborators to go unpunished. Encompassing rhetorical analysis trauma studies and recent scholarship on identity memory and law Wolpert's study sheds new light on a pivotal period in Athens' history. . 2001. 0801867908 . 1992Best.-Nr. 6661Franz Steiner Verlag. Very Good. Softcover. 2 small Creases along spine. Signed by author to Christian Habicht on ffep.; Historia - Einzelschriften; 83 pages; A new and expanded text with translation of the best-known Spartan inscription Meiggs & Lewis no. 67 together with detailed epigraphical textual historical and economic commentaries. The new text is based on a fresh examination of the stone the diaries of early travellers who saw the stone when it was better preserved than it is today and a newly discovered fragment which adds Aiginetan and Chian exiles and individual Achaians and Spartans to the list of Sparta's war supporters. This new text enables the date of the inscription previously controversial to be fixed in the early years of the Peloponnesian War thereby shedding light on Spartan war-finance and Greek attitudes towards Athens in the 420s and providing a badly-needed fixed point for Laconian Epigraphy. The monograph also clarifies the meaning of the Greek words opheugoo ophugaso.; Signed by Author . 1992. 3515061479 . Franz Steiner Verlag paperback

A few cellotape stains to inner covers else Book is VG.; 1.25 x 9.5 x 6.5 Inches; 376 pages; The city of Memphis on the Nile which had often served as capital in the long period preceding Egypt's conquest by Alexander the Great became the country's "second city" following the founding of Alexandria. Drawing on archaeological findings and on an unusual combination of Greek and Egyptian evidence Dorothy Thompson examines the city's economic life and the character of its multi-racial society in the era from Alexander to Augustus. Memphis under the Ptolemies will interest students of intercultural relations and will be essential reading for Egyptologists papyrologists and historians of the Hellenistic world including those concerned with religion. The relationship of the native population with the Greek-speaking immigrants is illustrated in Thompson's analysis of the position of Memphite priests within the Ptolemaic state. Egyptians continued to control mummification and the cult of the dead; the undertakers of the Memphite necropolis were barely touched by things Greek. The cult of the living Apis bull also remained primarily Egyptian; yet on death the bull deified as Osorapis became Sarapis for the Greeks. Within this god's sacred enclosure the Sarapieion is found a strange amalgam of Greek and Egyptian cultures. . 1989. 0691035938 . Princeton University Press hardcover

2000Best.-Nr. 5992University of Toronto Press. Near Fine with no dust jacket. Hardcover. Very slight shelfwear else Fine.; Phoenix Supplementary Volume; 300 pages; Scholars have long known that the Egyptian Ptolemaic monarchy underwent a transformation between 323 and 30 BC. The queens of that dynasty started as subordinates of the kings but ended as their superiors. Exactly when and how this change occurred has proven problematic for modern scholars. R. A. Hazzard argues that this change was put in motion by Ptolemy II who glorified his sister ArsinoT and made acceptable a civilian style of kingship based on piety towards his real and mythical ancestors. Ptolemy's support and elevation of his sister inspired the queens of the line to assert themselves at the expense of their male associates. The process culminated in the absolute rule of Kleopatra VII after 47 BC. Hazzard presents a clear argument based on the numismatic epigraphical papyrological literary and historical sources. . 2000. 0802043135 . University of Toronto Press hardcover

1987Best.-Nr. 6120Cambridge University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. Light shelfwear. Spine ends are slightly rounded. Gift inscription from author on ffep "For Professor Habicht with kind regards Gabriel Herman".; 224 pages; In this book Gabriel Herman offers a new interpretation of Greek xenia a term traditionally rendered as 'guest-friendship'. Drawing on contemporary literary sources and inscriptions as well as anthropology sociology and comparative evidence from other times he shows that xenia was a bond of fictitious kinship akin to godparenthood rather than a tie of hospitality or ordinary 'friendship'. Starting off from this proposition he develops a dynamic model of the formation of elite relationships and values. He explores the concepts of obligation and loyalty gift and bribe treason and patriotism and places the Greek city within a new context of power relations. This book which assumes no knowledge of Greek will be of interest to students and teachers of ancient history and classics. It will also appeal to social and political scientists.; Signed by Author . 1987. 0521325412 . Cambridge University Press hardcover
