In this comprehensive work on the evolution of defensive architecture in Greek and Dalmatian coastal cities during the period of Venetian Rule architect Nikos Skoutelis illustrates from an anthropocentric viewpoint the influence of war on the urban and natural landscape. The book’s first section delimits the space-time frame of the fortification works’ development according to the defensive plan Venice as a political and administrative decision centre elaborated in its possessions. The second section presents the contribution and action of the military engineers and architects. Το ΑÏχείο ΧαÏτογÏαφίας του Î•Î»Î»Î·Î½Î¹ÎºÎ¿Ï Î§ÏŽÏου ιδÏÏθηκε το 2002 με τη δωÏεά του ΒίκτωÏος και της Îιόβης Μελά. Η έκθεση παÏουσιάζει τις εικόνες του Αιγαίου όσες αποτυπώθηκαν σε χάÏτες και γεωγÏαφικά ÎÏγα κατά τους Ï€Ïώιμους νεότεÏους χÏόνους. Î Ïόκειται για μια καθοÏιστική πεÏίοδο καθώς από τον ÏστεÏο Μεσαίωνα στο πλαίσιο της λατινικής κυÏιαÏχίας σε ακτές και νησιά του Αιγαίου οικοδομείται και σταδιακά παγιώνεται η γεωγÏαφική έννοια και η χαÏτογÏαφική εικόνα του «ΑÏχιπελάγους» της λειτουÏγικής ενότητας των ακτών και των νησιών του Αιγαίου μιας ενότητας με οικονομικό γεωγÏαφικό και εξουσιαστικό χαÏακτήÏα. Με τη σειÏά της η οθωμανική κατάκτηση επικάθεται στο «ΑÏχιπÎλαγος» των Λατίνων και ολοκληÏώνει την πολιτική του ενοποίηση μετατÏÎποντάς το σε «οθωμανική λίμνη». Η Ï‡Ïονική πεÏίοδος που καλÏπτεται από την έκθεση αÏχίζει με την εμφάνιση του Αιγαίου ως ÎµÎ¹Î´Î¹ÎºÎ¿Ï θέματος στη δυτική Ï‡Î±ÏτογÏαφία κατά τον ÏστεÏο Μεσαίωνα και σταματά με την πλήÏη ένταξή του στην Οθωμανική Î‘Ï…Ï„Î¿ÎºÏατοÏία. Σκοπός της έκθεσης είναι να παÏουσιάσει τη σχετική με το Αιγαίο χαÏτογÏαφική παÏαγωγή και να την εντάξει στο ιστοÏικό της πλαίσιο. Îα αναδείξει δηλαδή τους λόγους για τους οποίους σχεδιάστηκαν και κυκλοφόÏησαν οι χάÏτες του Αιγαίου και να φωτίσει τις ποικίλες ανάγκες -Ï€ÏακτικÎÏ‚ γνωστικές ή ÎµÎ½Î·Î¼ÎµÏωτικÎÏ‚- που καλÏπτουν οι χάÏτες. ΚυÏίως όμως να εÏμηνεÏσει τη συγκÏότηση και τη λειτουÏγία της εικόνας του Αιγαίου που Ï€Ïότειναν οι χαÏτογÏάφοι και η οποία τελικά εντυπώθηκε στις συνειδήσεις του κοινοÏ. Την εικόνα αυτή την υφαίνουν ποικίλες Ï€Ïοσεγγίσεις: οι εμπειÏικÎÏ‚ χαÏτογÏαφήσεις των εμποÏευόμενων ναυτικών οι λόγιες εξακÏιβώσεις των κοσμογÏάφων οι χαÏτογÏαφικÎÏ‚ Ï€ÏακτικÎÏ‚ των μηχανισμών της αποικιακής εξάπλωσης. Οι Ï€Ïοσεγγίσεις αυτές λειτουÏγοÏν ταυτόχÏονα και συμπληÏώνουν η μία την άλλη. Μέσα από αυτές αναδÏονται τα επάλληλα δίκτυα που οÏίζουν την ενότητα του χώÏου καθώς και η σÏνθετη αλληλεπίδÏαση της οικονομίας της πολιτικής και της ιστοÏίας στη διαμόÏφωση της γεωγÏαφικής οπτικής. Όπως σημειώνει στον Î Ïόλογό του ο Î’Î¯ÎºÏ„Ï‰Ï Θ. Μελάς «από τότε που κατοικήθηκαν τα νησιά του και τα παÏάλιά του το Αιγαίο ήταν θάλασσα που δεν αποτελοÏσε εμπόδιο αλλά Î³ÎφυÏα επικοινωνίας για όσους είχαν εγκατασταθεί στις ακτές του. Και όχι μόνο όταν υπάÏχουν πλέον αποδείξεις ότι από νωÏίς το Αιγαίο διαδÏαμάτιζε το Ïόλο του κÎντÏου Î¼ÎµÏ„Î±Î¾Ï Ï„Ïιών ηπείÏων». Στο εισαγωγικό σημείωμά του ο ΓιώÏγος Τόλιας επισκοπεί τη διαδοχή των θαλασσινών κοινοπολιτειών του Αιγαίου μέσα στον ιστοÏικό χÏόνο. Ο Îίκος Μπελαβίλας αναλÏει το σÏνθετο ζήτημα των εγκαταστάσεων στον χώÏο του Αιγαίου από τον ÏστεÏο Μεσαίωνα και μετά ÎµÏμηνεÏοντας την ανάπτυξη του Î¿Î¹ÎºÎ¹ÏƒÏ„Î¹ÎºÎ¿Ï Î´Î¹ÎºÏ„Ïου του Αιγαίου σε συνάÏτηση με τα ποικίλα δίκτυα επικοινωνιών ενώ ο ΔημήτÏης ΔημητÏόπουλος φωτίζει τις ιδιότυπες οικονομικές κοινωνικές και εξουσιαστικές σχέσεις που αναπτÏχθηκαν στα νησιά και τις ακτές του Αιγαίου κατά την πεÏίοδο μετάβασης από τη λατινική στην οθωμανική ÎºÏ…ÏιαÏχία.
