Classicists and ancient historians have turned to Works and Days for its insights on Greek mythology and religion. The poem also sheds light on economic history and ancient agriculture and is a good resource for social scientists interested in these areas. This translation emphasizes the activities and problems of a practicing agriculturist as well as the larger changing political and economic institutions of the early archaic period. The authors provide a clear accurate translation along with notes aimed at a broad audience. The introductory essay discusses the changing economic political and trading world of the eighth and seventh centuries B. C. E. while the notes present the range and possible meanings of important Greek terms and references in the poem and highlight areas of ambiguity in our understanding of Works and Days. . 1978. 0198140053 . Very minor shelfwear.; Where did "democracy" come from and what was its original form and meaning Here Josiah Ober shows that this "power of the people" crystallized in a revolutionary uprising by the ordinary citizens of Athens in 508-507 B. C. He then examines the consequences of the development of direct democracy for upper-and lower-class citizens for dissident Athenian intellectuals and for those who were denied citizenship under the new regime women slaves resident foreigners as well as for the general development of Greek history. When the citizens suddenly took power into their own hands they changed the cultural and social landscape of Greece thereby helping to inaugurate the Classical Era. Democracy led to fundamental adjustments in the basic structures of Athenian society altered the forms and direction of political thinking and sparked a series of dramatic reorientations in international relations. It quickly made Athens into the most powerful Greek city-state but it also fatally undermined the traditional Greek rules of warfare. It stimulated the development of the Western tradition of political theorizing and encouraged a new conception of justice that has striking parallels to contemporary theories of rights. But Athenians never embraced the notions of inherency and inalienability that have placed the concept of rights at the center of modern political thought. Thus the play of power that constituted life in democratic Athens is revealed as at once strangely familiar and desperately foreign and the values sustaining the Athenian political community as simultaneously admirable and terrifying.; Edinburgh Readings On The Ancient World; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 368 pages . 2008. 0748625852 . Stapled offprint of book review tipped in.; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 208 pages; According to legend Aspasia of Miletus was a courtesan the teacher of Socrates and the political adviser of her lover Pericles. Next to Sappho and Cleopatra she is the best known woman of the ancient Mediterranean. Yet continued uncritical reception of her depiction in Attic comedy and naive acceptance of Plutarch's account of her in his Life of Pericles prevent us from understanding who she was and what her contributions to Greek thought may have been. Madeleine Henry combines traditional philological and historical methods of analysis with feminist critical perspectives in order to trace the construction of Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient times to the present. Through her analysis of both literary and political evidence Henry determines the ways in which Aspasia has become an icon of the sexually attractive and politically influential female how this construction has prevented her from taking her rightful place as a contributor to the philosophical enterprise and how continued belief in this icon has helped sexualize all women's intellectual achievements. This is the first work to study Aspasia's biographical tradition from ancient Greece to the present day. . 1995. 0195087127 . Oxford University Press hardcover

1992rif. 43025Princeton University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Hardcover. Very minor shelfwear. Former owner's name on ffep.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 312 pages; In this ground-breaking analysis of the world's first private banks Edward Cohen convincingly demonstrates the existence and functioning of a market economy in ancient Athens while revising our understanding of the society itself. Challenging the "primitivistic" view in which bankers are merely pawnbrokers and money-changers Cohen reveals that fourth-century Athenian bankers pursued sophisticated transactions. Special emphasis is placed on the reflection of Athenian cognitive patterns in financial practices. Cohen shows how transactions were affected by the complementary opposites embedded in the very structure of Athenian language and thought. In turn his analysis offers great insight into daily Athenian reality and cultural organization. "Cohen embodies a role of traditional relevance in research on classical antiquity but one that is increasingly a rarity: he is a `man of affairs' who brings his practical professional experience to bear on his historical research." Thomas J. Figueira Bryn Mawr Classical Review "Cohen possesses an impressive knowledge of the relevant classical and modern literature as well as a close practical acquaintance with contemporary banking an unusual but fortuitous set of qualifications. Highly readable and contains a wealth of interesting details on social conditions generally." John R. Love American Historical Review "A thoroughly documented and imaginatively argued book that will mark a new stage in the study of Athenian banking." David C.
