1967When the Athenians took the island of Sphacteria, there was one among the Spartans, a youth name Ariston, who would not surrender, who thrust out his sword and made a desperate, suicidal charge. But Ariston was fated to live- he was saved by a blow from Orchomenus, the Spartan soldier who loved and hated him too much to let him die. He came to Athens a slave, a prostitute whose favors were sold by Polyxenus, the bathhouse keeper. In time, although not a citizen, he was to become one of the most powerful men in his adopted city, the friend and patron of Sokrates and Eurepides, the embodiment of all that was finest in the Athenian spirit. But always Ariston lived in the shadow of a black day in Sparta when, because of him, a beautiful young girl was hideously slaughtered- again and again suffering and death came close to those he loved. 1993"In the dramatic monologues that make up The Fourth Dimension -e specially those based on the grim history of Mycenae and its royal protagonists - the celebrated modern Greek poet Yannis Ritsos presents a timeless poetic paradigm of the condition of Greece, past and present. The volume also contains a group of modern narratives, including the famous, and much-anthologized, "Moonlight Sonata." Ritsos, rightly, regarded the The Fourth Dimension as his finest achievement. It is now presented to English speaking readers for the first time in its entirety." 326p. notes Book

1991In 1952 the decipherment of the Linear B script suddenly revealed the Greekness of Mycenaean Greece. Now, after new discoveries and more than 20 years of intensive work, scholars are able to interpret the written documents and reconstruct from them a vivid picture of life in this remote period, in a way which is impossible from archaeology alone. John Chadwick, who assisted Ventris in the original decipherment, has played a major part in these advances. He now summarizes the results of research and in so doing opens the door to a new world, Mycenaean Greece seen through the eyes of its inhabitants. The tablets may be only, as he describes them, "the account books of anonymous clerks", but from these prosaic documents he shows how we can infer a bronze industry, foreign slave-women, or even human sacrifice. Not least important is the comparison of the newly available data with the Homeric account, much to the detriment of Homer"s credibility as a witness. 201p. illus. maps. bubliograohy. index Book

1991Covers period up to 1985. 352p. bibliography.index "Modern Greece tells the story of Greece and its people, from the founding of Constantinople to the eclipse of socialism in the late twentieth century. C. M. Woodhouse is uniquely qualified to write the history of Greece, having served there in the Allied military and the British embassy during and after World War II before writing several books on Greece. In this classic work, which Woodhouse has updated five times to create a truly comprehensive history, the depth of his knowledge and understanding of the country and its citizens comes through clearly in every chapter, as he ranges from the ascendancy and eventual fall of the Byzantine Empire through the emergence for the first time of a unified Greek kingdom in the 1800s to the political turmoil of twentieth-century politics. This is a book for readers and travelers who wish to understand the history and culture behind the beauty that is eternal Greece. Book
