2001rif. 43615Cambridge University Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. Includes cd-rom; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 316 pages; While the sculpted Ionic frieze of the Parthenon with its galloping horsemen and classically portrayed gods is reproduced in every art history text and has been much studied by scholars no single book has yet been devoted to all its myriad aspects. This study by classical archaeologist and art historian Jenifer Neils breaks new ground by considering all aspects of this complex and controversial monument. Although the frieze has been studied for over two hundred years most scholarship has sought an overall interpretation of the iconography rather than focusing on the sculpture's visual language essential for a full understanding of the narrative. Neils' study not only decodes the language of the frieze but also analyzes its conception and design style and content as well as its impact on later art. Unusual for its wide-ranging approach to the frieze this book also brings ethical reasoning to bear on the issue of its possible repatriation as part of the on-going Elgin Marble debate. As one of the foremost examples of the high classical style and the finest expression of mid-fifth century Athenian ideology the Parthenon frieze is without doubt one of the major monuments of western civilization and as such deserves to be understood in all its dimensions. The accompanying CD-ROM contains a virtual reality Macromedia Director movie of the complete frieze based on the plaster casts in the Skulpturhalle in Basel Switzerland. Developed by Rachel Rosenzweig of the Department of Greek and Roman Art of the Cleveland Museum of Art the casts are arranged in conformity with Neils' reconstruction and enable the user to view them in succession as if walking around the Parthenon. The CD-ROM requires a computer running either MAC OS 8.01 or later or Windows 95 or later. . 2001. 0521641616 . Cambridge University Press hardcover

1995rif. 44716Oxford University Press. Very Good. Softcover. light foxing to top of textblock. Tiny chip to base of spine.; 454 pages; This is an exciting and entirely new synthesis combining anthropology political and social history and a close reading of central Greek texts to account for two of the most significant hallmarks in Homeric epic and Athenian tragedy: the representation of ritual and codes of reciprocity. Both genres are pervaded by these features yet each treats them in entirely different ways. In this book Seaford shows that these differences cannot be accounted for in merely literary terms but require a historical explanation. Challenging thoroughly lucid and at times controversial this lively and original work is the first to attempt to understand the development of early Greek literature from the perspective of state-formation. It should interest all those concerned with the literature and history of classical Greece. . 1995. 0198150369 . Oxford University Press paperback

Scholar's name to ffep Martin Cropp. DJ spine is sunned and discolored. Faint edgewear to DJ.; 414 pages; Hesiod was an ancient Greek poet whose Works and Days discusses agricultural practices and society in general. Classicists and ancient historians have turned to Works and Days for its insights on Greek mythology and religion. The poem also sheds light on economic history and ancient agriculture and is a good resource for social scientists interested in these areas. This translation emphasizes the activities and problems of a practicing agriculturist as well as the larger changing political and economic institutions of the early archaic period. The authors provide a clear accurate translation along with notes aimed at a broad audience. The introductory essay discusses the changing economic political and trading world of the eighth and seventh centuries B. C. E. while the notes present the range and possible meanings of important Greek terms and references in the poem and highlight areas of ambiguity in our understanding of Works and Days. . 1978. 0198140053 . 2008rif. 42478Edinburgh University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. Underlining in pencil to a few pages. Very minor shelfwear.; Where did "democracy" come from and what was its original form and meaning Here Josiah Ober shows that this "power of the people" crystallized in a revolutionary uprising by the ordinary citizens of Athens in 508-507 B. C. He then examines the consequences of the development of direct democracy for upper-and lower-class citizens for dissident Athenian intellectuals and for those who were denied citizenship under the new regime women slaves resident foreigners as well as for the general development of Greek history. When the citizens suddenly took power into their own hands they changed the cultural and social landscape of Greece thereby helping to inaugurate the Classical Era. Democracy led to fundamental adjustments in the basic structures of Athenian society altered the forms and direction of political thinking and sparked a series of dramatic reorientations in international relations. It quickly made Athens into the most powerful Greek city-state but it also fatally undermined the traditional Greek rules of warfare. It stimulated the development of the Western tradition of political theorizing and encouraged a new conception of justice that has striking parallels to contemporary theories of rights. But Athenians never embraced the notions of inherency and inalienability that have placed the concept of rights at the center of modern political thought. Thus the play of power that constituted life in democratic Athens is revealed as at once strangely familiar and desperately foreign and the values sustaining the Athenian political community as simultaneously admirable and terrifying.; Edinburgh Readings On The Ancient World; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 368 pages . 2008. 0748625852 .
