1990Studies in Ancient Civilization; 226 pages; Athenian Politics examines the limitations and problems attendant upon the use of traditional sources to understand Athenian history. Presenting, in translation, virtually all the sources from which scholars have drawn their conclusions about ancient Athenian society--from contemporary accounts and stone inscriptions to Egyptian papyri--Stanton challenges the way scholars have viewed ancient Athens. Covering the period from the reforms of Solon to the constitutional changes of Kleisthenes, Athenian Politics explores democracy's paradoxical emergence from the actions of an undemocratic noble elite.

1995rif. 8441E. J. Brill. Fine in Fine dust jacket. Hardcover. Unwrapped in plastic.; Mnemosyne Vol Suppl. 145; 487 pages; This work surveys available evidence on Athenian settlements and settlers of the fourth century BC calling several conventional interpretations about them into question through a rigorous preference for evidence over speculation. Three chapters trace a chronology of events relating to the settlements examining their personnel collectively statistically and individually and discussing evidence for their political economic and religious institutions. Long appendices establish improved texts of numerous inscriptions relevant to the topic and provide several kinds of data on more than 1000 definite probable or possible settlers. This text is intended to be of use to students of Attic political institutions epigraphy and prosopography and of fourth-century-BC Greek history. . 1995. 9004099913 . E. J. Brill hardcover

1983Moving personal testimony of the way the Jews were deported from Greece to concentration camps during the Nazi occupation. Errikos Sevillias was born in Athens in 1901 into a Sephardic family. He learned how to work in leather as a child and opened his own leather workshop when he was 16. From 1919 until 1923 he served in the Greek army, for three years fighting in Asia Minor. After the war he reopened his workshop, married, and had a daughter. Life, as he writes, "went along well" until he experienced "an inexplicable and unexpected great adventure," meaning Auschwitz. Errikos Sevillias was killed in Athens by a motorcycle in 1974, when he was 73 years old. The manuscript of this book was found among his papers after he died. He describes the appalling events at Auschwitz with extraordinary calm, saying merely that he couldn't understand "what they wanted in doing such an unjust and evil thing." His simple statements of events give the clearest possible image of the indescribable. The manuscript was translated by Nikos Stavroulakis, who also has provided an extremely useful historical outline of the Jewish presence in Greece with a description of the occupation and final solution. 125p.+ plates Book
