1993Top corner of wrap has slight tear. ; Clarendon Paperbacks; 0.97 x 9.23 x 6.24 Inches; 440 pages; In 338 BC Philip II of Macedon established Macedonian rule over Greece; he was succeeded in 336 by his son Alexander the Great, whose conquests in the twelve years that followed reached as far as the Russian steppes, Afghanistan, and the Punjab, and created the Hellenistic world. The study of Macedonia is now a growing point in ancient history. The first ever history of ancient Macedonia has now been completed in three volumes by N. G. L. Hammond, helped by G. T. Griffith and F. W. Walbank. On the basis of that work Professor Hammond now provides in one volume a history of the Macedonian state and its institutions both in Europe and in the Hellenistic kingdoms in Asia and Egypt, on which much new light has been shed by epigraphic and archaeological discoveries. Those institutions have had a profound influence on subsequent history. Full references are given to the ancient sources of information and to archaeological, numismatic, and epigraphic articles.

1980The whole of Greece, as every traveller and archaeologist knows, is alive with history and prehistory. Mr and Mrs Burn select over seventy of the most important and interesting places, islands and buildings, relate what happened there in the past, and describe in detail what now remains. Some of these sites are well known, others less so; but all have been chosen not only for their historical interest and beauty, but also because remains still exist, usually above foundation level, bringing the past to life. Inevitably, the greater part of this book is devoted to prehistoric and classical places, sites of a civilisation ancestral to our own; but attention is also given to the great (and some small) churches and monasteries of Christian Greece and to the major Frankish castles of mediaeval times. A lively outline of Greek history provides an introduction and puts the whole in perspective, and each site is illustrated by a specially-drawn plan or map and, in many cases, a photograph. The authors' enthusiasm for the country and its past is vividly conveyed in their writing, making The Living Past of Greece an invaluable companion for the traveller already there or for the reader and potential traveller at home. 2012réf. 22171Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Very Good dust jacket. Hardcover. 1 corner lightly bumped else book is fine. DJ has tiny chip near heel of spine.; Athenians in the classical period 508-322 BC were drawn to an image of themselves as a compassionate and generous people who rushed to the aid of others in distress both at home and abroad. What relation does this image bear to actual Athenian behavior This book argues that Athenians felt little pressure as individuals to help fellow citizens whom they did not know. Democratic ideology called on citizens to refrain from harming one another rather than to engage in mutual support and emphasized the importance of the helping relationship between citizen and city rather than among individual citizens. If the obligation of Athenians to help fellow citizens was fairly tenuous all the more so was their responsibility to intervene to assist the peoples of other states; a distinct pragmatism prevailed in the city's decisions concerning intervention abroad.; 215 pages . 2012. 1107029775 . 1975Dustjacket is protected in mylar. One closed tear along front panel of dustjacket. Edgewear to head of DJ. Back panel has one small piece missing of DJ. ; 250 pages; Themistocles (ca. 525 BC-460 BC) was a leader in the Athenian democracy during the Persian War. Themistocles favored the expansion of the navy to meet the Persian threat and persuaded the Athenians to spend the surplus generated by their silver mines on building new ships - the Athenian navy grew from 70 to 200 ships. Despite the importance of this enigmatic figure in Greek history, our knowledge still largely comes from the ancient accounts of Herodotus, Thucydides, and Plutarch. Podlecki provides the first modern comprehensive assessment of Themistocles, based on literary and archaeological evidence.
