Unpublished originally taken for the May 6 1976 issue of Jet Magazine Vol. 50 No. 7 which is also included here. Fine condition magazine nearly fine with slightest tanning. Fine. Redd Foxx left NBC in 1976 after a successful run of six seasons of Sanford and Sun and went to ABC producing a short-lived show called The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour which was canceled after its first season due to poor ratings despite wide critical acclaim. Jet Magazine covered the transition in an article in 1976 with photographs by Isaac Sutton. Offered here are eight unused images from the shoot capturing Foxx in a range of setings including a swimming pool and on his moped riding around Los Angeles. A nice group from the height of Foxx's career in comedy although his stint at ABC would wind up being a disappointment considering his earlier success. unknown books

Light fading to spine light toning to interior light foxing and soiling in a few places. $450. Fourth Stated Edition. Written for a popular lay audience by barrister Robert Sutton this work served as an essential accessible handbook during a period of rapid urbanization in Georgian Britain. As the preface dramatically asserts "three fourths of the Inhabitants of Great Britain are composed of Landlords Tenants and Lodgers." By the turn of the nineteenth century lodging had become ubiquitous across British society-present in an estimated one-eighth of all households-creating widespread legal anxiety over leases unpaid rent distraint of goods and property damage. Sutton's manual offered a balanced practical toolkit for both parties: advising landlords on legal eviction and distraint procedures while warning tenants against "encroaching landlords" and predatory rent practices. It includes a generous appendix of workable legal instruments including standard forms for leases notices to quit assignment of tenancies and rental receipts. First published around 1796 the work's immense utility proved enduring going through at least eleven editions by 1821. Despite its commercial success survival rates for physical copies o. unknown books

Attractive recent quarterbinding with marbled boards. Condition of the contents is about Good with some wear. a few brown spots and several partial erasures of some pencil markings. No Jacket. Rev. Griggs was the author of a number of books and is best known for the five novels he wrote and self-published between 1899 and 1908. This is a non-fiction item about racial issues which was apparently first published in 1909 in 2 versions of 116 and 134 pages a third version in 1910 of 145 pages and 2 further versions in 1911 of 193 and 259 pages. This makes our copy the 4th version or edition. We owe this information to John Gruesser a professor of English at Kean University who inquired about the contents of another copy and was kind enough not to mention our previous misidentification of the edition. One chapter or section that caught our eye is titled "Southern Statesmanship and the Negro Woman" pages 127-142 which talks about the defenseless position of African American women under white supremacy the claimed desire of whites to maintain racial purity and the impossibility of doing that unless African American women are protected from predatory white men. The 5th version apparently adds a final section -- with a separate title-page "Beyond the End" and a Table of Contents -- but we are told that no material in the first 193 pages appears to have been revised in that final edition. 1987réf. 45499New York: n.p. 1987. Very good. Original book sculpture that is cleverly literal featuring a figure made of found materials with a matchstick "penis" attached to a spring. Bruno Pasquier-Desvignes defies classification. THE NEW YORK TIMES calls him "part tinkerer and part storyteller a cross between Alexander Calder and Jean Tinguely;" filmmaker James Ivory compares him to Picasso noting his ability to "pick up any old thing lying around see its possibilities for transformation and then turn it into a new and enchanting thing" RURAL INTELLIGENCE. Pasquier-Desvignes's book sculptures highlight his ingenuity creativity and humor as he toys with the idea of a codex as a container. A 1967 copy of THE EXHIBITIONIST by Henry Sutton provides the setting for a figure made of found materials including a bouncing "penis" made out of a matchstick mounted on a spring. Pasquier-Desvignes managed to make the rather simplistic EXHIBITIONIST amusingly expressive - it looks quite thrilled that you have opened the book to have a look at it. A delightful production. 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original cloth-backed boards. Bookblock fused with glue with rectangular recess cut into center. Figure made of found materials including cork spray paint nozzle pipe cleaners and an unlit match mounted inside recess; mirror to back of recess. Binding with light soil. Leaves and bookblock with mild scattered foxing. Small crack to upper right corner of mirror. Solid. n.p. unknown books

Griggs was a Black Baptist minister and novelist who spoke out against racial injustice more fervently than many of his contemporaries. He wrote and self-published five novels all of which were intended to counter the white supremacist writings of Thomas Dixon and Thomas Nelson Page. The academic Hugh M. Gloster wrote in 1943: "Though virtually unknown to white American readers his novels were probably more popular among the rank and file of Negroes than the fiction of Chesnutt and Dunbar. Militant and assertive Griggs chronicled the passing of the servile black man and hailed the advent of the intellectually emancipated Negro." The Hindered Hand written in direct response to Dixon's The Leopard's Spots chronicles the fate of a mixed-race family and addresses numerous national and international issues. A graphic lynching scene based on actual events depicts the torture and immolation of a Black couple. The novel ends with two characters departing for Africa followed by the five-page appendix "Notes for the Serious." A call to action and celebration of achievement the book is a forerunner to the Black Power movement that emerged decades later. Gloster again now president of Morehouse College and writing in 1969 "American Negroes who espouse black beauty black pride black militancy and black separatism are ideological successors of Dr. Sutton E. Griggs. The Orion Publishing Company unknown books
