It engages with a long-standing debate about what it is that bestows the designation "art" on an artwork. Tiffany Sutton shows how the history of art should influence the classification of visual art. She considers the various theories that have been put forward to define the nature of the artwork and then offers her own set of classificatory norms." -- FS REVIEW: Proves that confusion and obfuscation rather than freedom and democracy are God's gift to philosophers of art worldwide. -- with a bonus offer--; R520-Sutto; Sutton Tiffany The Classification of Visual Art: A Philosophical Myth and Its History ART HISTORY CRITICISM This book is an important and original contribution to the philosophy of art that bridges the disciplines of philosophy and art. Painted in preparation for other larger works including tapestries altarpieces engravings sculptures and ceiling paintings these small engaging sketches were completed entirely by the artist's own hand; they are thus a direct record of the artist's creative process an intimate glimpse of the original spark of inspiration. Rubens 1577-1640 was a man of broad talents and interests; he was immensely successful as a diplomat entrepreneur and artist in service to powerful patrons across Europe. Drawn by the Brush provides today's viewers with a window into the fertile imagination of this master revealing his artistic passion spontaneity and spirit of invention." 1911ref. 66101Nashville: Orion 1911. Fourth version or edition although not so identified in the book. Hardcover. Good internally. viii 3 12-193p. 19cm. Attractive recent quarterbinding with marbled boards. Condition of the contents is about Good with some wear. a few brown spots and several partial erasures of some pencil markings. No Jacket. Rev. Griggs was the author of a number of books and is best known for the five novels he wrote and self-published between 1899 and 1908. This is a non-fiction item about racial issues which was apparently first published in 1909 in 2 versions of 116 and 134 pages a third version in 1910 of 145 pages and 2 further versions in 1911 of 193 and 259 pages. This makes our copy the 4th version or edition. We owe this information to John Gruesser a professor of English at Kean University who inquired about the contents of another copy and was kind enough not to mention our previous misidentification of the edition. One chapter or section that caught our eye is titled "Southern Statesmanship and the Negro Woman" pages 127-142 which talks about the defenseless position of African American women under white supremacy the claimed desire of whites to maintain racial purity and the impossibility of doing that unless African American women are protected from predatory white men. The 5th version apparently adds a final section -- with a separate title-page "Beyond the End" and a Table of Contents -- but we are told that no material in the first 193 pages appears to have been revised in that final edition.
