1968rif. BIBLIO-46370Lund Humphries London first edition 1968. Illustrated cloth folio 41 cm. 116 1 pp fold-out chart numerous ills. From the introduction: "This atlas is an attempt to show by illustration rather than by explaining in words the main changes in type forms over 500 years of printing. We have enlarged many of the most important types in the history of printing so that their shapes can be seen clearly and compared. We also show either actual size or only slightly reduced an original use of the type which further demonstrates its qualities; then follow enlarged letters and full alphabets of currently available types derived from or in the manner of the same historical original. We have used the broadly chronological headings of Old Face Transitional Modern etc rather than more sophisticated systems whose virtues are still being debated. Many types today have no very clear ancestry as under modern conditions the use of old type face designs is only possible after drastic revision ; but when learning about types the authors found it helpful to look at the designs of the past in their historical setting. There seemed to be a continuity in the changes in letter forms which made them easier to understand and identify and comparison with modern faces gave a useful insight into their nature. Equally important influences on the shapes of printed letters are the ways in which the type is cast and the techniques of printing. Books on these subjects and a short list of type histories will be found in the bibliography at the end of the atlas." Contents: Introduction; Roman inscriptional lettering; Scripts; Johann Gutenberg; Gothic and roman; Venetian; Old Face Italian; Old Face French; Old Face Dutch; Early Transitional; Transitional 59; Late Transitional; Modern; Display; Fat Face; Egyptian; Clarendon; Decorative display; William Morris; Twentieth - century roman; Grotesque; Index of typefaces; Specimen text settings; Short bibliography. In the Caterpillar Times Vol. 35 No. 11 pg. 5 a promotional magazine of the Caterpillar Tractor Company available on Google Books named Caterpillar Times Volumes 35-37 in November 1915 there is what appears to be another image but at a different angle of this same engraving printed in the issue. The caption there reads "The biggest load ever pulled into El Rico Calif. Outfit of the El Rico Land Company. Total load - 55 tons 1300 pounds." There is not much information on the El Rico Land Company but they appear to have been an investment company/ land colonization company based in San Francisco which purchased land in and around the San Fernando Valley specially El Rico CA in order to encourage people to move there and farm it. A view of the equestrian statue of Charles II donated by Sir Robert Vyner. Sir Robert Vyner 1631-88 was a goldsmith and banker. He made the crown and orb for Charles II's coronation in 1661 after the original Crown Jewels had been lost while his father Charles I was fleeing the country. Vyner was made goldsmith to the King and knighted as a reward and became Lord Mayor of London in 1674. In 1668 St Mary Woolchurch was demolished to make way for the construction of a new market rebuilt as a fruit and vegetable market. The years after Vyner became Mayor he erected the statue in the centre. The statue had in fact been bought from Europe as an unfinished statue of John Sobieski King of Poland trampling on a Turk. Vyner had the statue altered so that Sobieski's head was replaced by Charles's and the Turk turned into Oliver Cromwell. The figure trampled under the horse's hooves is dressed in flowing Eastern robes. The statue was moved to make way for the construction of Mansion House. BM 18801113.3609.
