"Pieter de Hooch one of the most famous and innovative artists of Holland's Golden Age played a pioneering role in the Delft School and in the advancement of genre painting and naturalism in the seventeenth century. Best known for his expressive use of interior space and sun-filled courtyards de Hooch's command of perspective and responsiveness to light and atmosphere were unprecedented and his work undoubtedly influenced his younger but more famous colleague Vermeer. This beautiful book examines de Hooch's position in Dutch genre painting and the social and political context of his art in the United Netherlands. It also addresses the artists's favored themes-in particular the virtue of domesticity-and relates them to Dutch civilization literature and the history of the family in the Protestant republic." 183 pages. 1973Best.-Nr. 441j1184Stanford California: Hoover Institution Press. Very Good in Good dust jacket. 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. 0817911316 . "An analysis of the impact of Western technology and skills on the industrial development of the Soviet Union. The hypothesis is that the absorption of Western technology and skills has been by far the most significant factor in the development of the Soviet economy. No fundamental industrial innovation of Soviet origin has been identified there between 1917 and 1965 and preliminary investigation suggests this situation continued throughout the sixties. Concludes that the Soviet Union's central planning has virtually no capability for self-generated indigenous innovation. Antony Sutton 1925 - 2005 was a Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution from 1968 to 1973. Prior to that he was a professor of Economics at the California State University at Los Angeles." - dust jacket. xxxii 482 pages. Footnotes. Bibliography. Index. Tables. Figures. Best.-Nr. 2268618 September 1915. On letterhead with Royal Warrant of The Royal Seed Establishment Reading England. See the entry for Martin Hope Sutton in the Oxford DNB and that for his grandson Martin Hubert Fouquet Sutton in Who Was Who. 2pp 4to. I good condition lightly aged and worn. Folded three times. With RSA date stamp. Signed 'Martin H F Sutton'. In reply to a letter from Menzies Sutton expresses regret that 'it will be impossible for you to attend the Demonstration here on the 24th inst.' Sutton will be 'publishing certain particulars for the benefit of those present' and will be glad to send Menzies a copy. He continues: 'My experiments which are now in their second year have been carried out solely for the purpose of acquiring knowledge and I have no axe to grind for I am interested in none of the Syndicates formed for the purpose of placing radio-active fertilizers on the market.' He is disappointed that the results of his experiments are 'on the whole distinctly of a negative character' given 'the really elaborate character of the experiments' and 'the marvellous results obtained with radium when applied to plants'. He will consider acting on Menzies invitation to read a paper on the matter but in the meantime asks him to 'treat this letter as confidential'. In 1916 Sutton published 'Experiments in humogen in comparison with other fertiliser: a report of the tests carried out at Reading in 1916'. 18 September 1915.
