Early 17th-century marbled sheep pages slightly cocked very light water stain to outer edge catholic Bishop's wax seal to title page touching on last 4 lines of title and decorative border bookplate to verso. 18ll. The first published account of the first circumnavigation: the second Rome edition 'a literal copy' of the first Sabin. A pupil of Peter Martyr Maximillian was the illegitimate son of the Archbishop of Salzburg. Following the return to Seville in 1522 of the Victoria Maximillian was given the task of interviewing the crew when they visited the Spanish Court at Valladolid. This was the only one of the five vessels that set out from Spain in 1519 to survive the circumnavigation: on board there were just 18 of the expedition's original compliment of over 200 crewmen. Magellan's was an extraordinary achievement. With only the sun to guide him he was the first European to sail through the straits which carry his name and the first to enter the Pacific Ocean. By demonstrating that there was a Westward route he gave Spain access to the East Indies since the Treaty of Tordesillas of 1494 forbade them sailing East this right was reserved for Portugal. He also established the circumference of the earth and the length of a degree of latitude. Following Magellan's death at the hands of native people in the Philippines the expedition was commanded by Sebastian del Cano who continued West thereby completing the circumnavigation. Sabin 47040; Church I 56; Borba II 547. Rome, 1524 unknown
