The Companies Acts of New Zealand were last year consolidated in the Companies Act 1903 a text of which is here printed. We regret that owing to exigencies of space we are unable to deal at length with this interesting volume which suggests much matter for comparison and must content ourselves with congratulating the author on having produced a well-planned and so far as we have tested it a careful and exhaustive treatise on his subject.": Juridical Review 16 1904 452. 1890ref. 232384New Zealand 1890. 1 vols. 3-3/8 x 2-1.2. Mounted to card. Slight circular abrasion in lower right corner of image. 1 vols. 3-3/8 x 2-1.2. A rare care-de-visite portrait of Tawhiao c. 1822-1894 the 2nd Maori King who ".left a legacy of religious principles from which his people would draw a future dream for Tainui: the rebirth of a self-sufficient economic base supported by the strength and stability of the people. Native trees and foods symbolise strength and self-sufficiency in his statement: 'I shall build my own house the ridge-pole will be of hinau and the supporting posts of mahoe and patate. Those who inhabit that house shall be raised on rengarenga and nurtured on kawariki.' During Tawhiao's exile Waikato people had reflected and focused on the powerful symbols of the King movement. The man and the vision became united and part of the traditions and knowledge of the people. The vision is recounted and passed on to later generations at tribal hui where it continues to be discussed and debated." - www.nzhistory.net.nz. unknown books
1918ref. 236571918. International travel and native documentation photograph album circa 1918 to 1930 documenting how an English speaking group encountered MÄori New Zealand Atlantic Africa Chile California and the Panama Canal during the golden age of long distance steamship travel and an era of Western imperial expansion across the globe. Photographs record the MÄori built environment at Rotorua the geothermal landscape surrounding PÅhutu geyser and Cape Verdean men working from small boats beside a passenger vessel at São Vicente. These images preserve the travelers' view of early twentieth century infrastructure cities Indigenous people labor and daily life. The album documents Indigenous communities rural life and economy and the foreign visitors who photographed and captioned them. Photograph album of approximately 220 silver gelatin photographs in various small formats New Zealand Britain Atlantic Africa South America California and Panama circa 1918 to 1930. The Rotorua sequence includes two travelers standing before a carved MÄori whare women beside a thermal pool and visitors at PÅhutu geyser recording architecture and geothermal land as parts of the tourist economy. The photographs preserve MÄori visual culture through the carved meeting house and its ornament but the captions remain those of visitors and do not identify the house carvers guides or community represented. A photograph captioned "Divers at St Vincent's off the coast of Africa" shows several small boats clustered around the travelers' ship with local men rowing diving and working close to the hull. The scene records maritime labor at São Vicente in Cape Verde a major Atlantic coaling and provisioning port where local workers serviced foreign steamships and performed hazardous labor within an economy controlled by international shipping. Chilean pages show ox drawn traffic in Santiago streets in Valparaíso and Coquimbo and residents posed in urban settings while California photographs include San Juan Capistrano and San Diego's mission revival architecture. Other photographs show women and men on farms horse teams plowing fields harvesting machinery a steam powered chaff cutter railway assisted canal operations cargo handling passenger steamships and small boat traffic. The album belongs to the golden age of passenger travel when steamship companies expanded international routes and promoted distant ports Indigenous cultural sites engineering works and territories shaped by Western imperial power as components of an increasingly accessible international tourism. At Rotorua MÄori guides hosts performers and communities made tourism possible while government agencies regulated access presentation and revenue; the resulting photographs preserve MÄori presence and engagement while also recording the selective framework through which visitors encountered MÄori culture. At São Vicente the divers and boatmen appear as laboring figures their work framed as spectacle from the deck of a foreign vessel. Moderate wear to the album covers and binding with occasional fading silvering and surface abrasion to the photographs; several captions faint but legible. Overall in good condition. A visual record of how Indigenous architecture labor land and historical memory were encountered during the expansion of Western imperial commercial and transportation power. unknown books

1870ref. 170751c. 1870s. New Zealand through a watercolourist's eyes A colourful record of travels in search of the picturesque including views of lakes Wakatipu Wanaka Rotoma and Te Anau as well as depictions of cattle and sheep stations and settlements. The unidentified traveller evidently ventured via Tasmania for the album opens with paintings of Hobart town mistakenly identified as in New Zealand and its harbour. The finest watercolour is a sweeping double-page panorama of Te Anau framed against the mountainous horizon. At Wakatipu the artist both drew from the shore and on a steamer in the middle of the lake. Their attention to natural scenery for example a waterfall in the Rees Valley is matched by their ability to capture the feel of New Zealand's prospering settlements. One painting shows Thompson's Station established beside Lake Wanaka in 1859 while another documents a flourishing homestead near Nelson. Landscape octavo. With card leaves 19 full-page watercolours watercolour spanning double-page spread 16 illustrations with pencilled caption. Original black quarter roan sketchbook rebacked with original spine laid down spine and boards tooled in gilt grey cloth sides black band. Contemporary inscription "Hamond Fakenham". Binding with some wear watercolours generally well preserved one leaf now loosely inserted: very good. hardcover
