1784réf. 29435The Netherlands 1784. Prints. A grouping of three small copper engravings from Cook's 3rd voyage to the Sandwich Islands Hawaii published in a Dutch edition of the book. They include the man wearing a full head mask; carvings weapons and feather work and the Hawaiian man dansing. The plate numbers are CXXIV CXXIII CXVII. Each roughly 4.5 x 6.5" strong impressions very good condition. unknown

The images illustrate the native Hawaiians at their village on the island now called Kauai plt. 35. The ethnographic items include featherwork carving and weapons embedded with shark teeth plt. 67. Both with very wide margin. Paper sizes 21.5 x 16.25". The Atooi print with light marginal dusting and a small closed tear ikn the margin lower left. unknown

The view is from the voluminous 'Voyage Autour du Monde Execute Pendant les Annees 18361837 sur la Corvette La Bonite'. The monument was erected approximately where Captain James Cook was killed in 1779. The view was sketched by Theodore Fisquet one of the artists on the Bonite expedition a French scientific and diplomatic voyage that circumnavigated the globe in 1836 - 1837. Unlike Cook's voyage the Bonite was particularly fortunate and no sailors were lost. Black and white lithograph plate 47. 12.5 x 9" plus wide margins very good condition. Hawaiian Islanders as We See 'Em - published by NEWSPAPER CARTOONIST ASSOCIATION OF THE TERRITORY OF HAWAII 1912 9.25 x 6.25 unpaginated ca 100 full page recto only cartoons/portraits of men not a single women was included into this book in 1912 considered prominent in Hawaii by the local Cartoonist Association. The usual mix of lawyers and business men - almost all Caucasian with Curtis Iaukea and Kuhio Kalanianaole being the only true Hawaiian Islanders. Interesting is how may of these important white men have already been born in Hawaii as the second generation to missionaries and entrepreneurs who came from the US mainland and Europe in the mid 1800's. From the Preface: "The publishers have tried to pick out the best known citizens get good photo portraits of them with suitable embellishments by the pen and ink artist in such style as to remind the subjects and their friends . of what are their occupations - and idiosyncrasies." Each cartoon lists the name occupation date and place of birth recreational interests club memberships and the address ! of each person Condition the front cover is barely hanging on one page of the illustrated front endpapers is loose the back cover is still well attached. The spine is faded not sure if there used be something printed on it. The cover edges are rubbed. The front cover is missing a piece of the right lower corner.
