1996ref. 90953New York: Four Walls Eight Windows 1996. First Four Walls Eight Windows Paperback Edition statedFirst Printing Stated. Trade paperback. Very good. The format is approximately 8.25 inches by 11 inches. 168 pages. Illustrated covers with flaps. Illustrations. Notes on Sources. Bibliography. Index. Foreword by Ada Louise Huxtable. This work traces the history of the creation operation and demolition of New York's Pennsylvania Station. Born and raised in New York City Lorraine B. Diehl is the author of The Late Great Pennsylvania Station; Subways: The Tracks That Built New York City; and The Automat: The History Recipes and Allure of Horn & Hardart's Masterpiece. She has contributed to New York magazine the New York Times Travel & Leisure American Heritage and the New York Daily News where her weekly feature "Secret City" appeared. She lives in New York with her husband Bill an entertainment correspondent for ABC News Radio. "In October 1963 the once great Pennsylvania Stations was dismantled piece by elegant piece carried away to a waste dump in New Jersey. Just as the classical structure was an emblem of turn-of-the-century prosperity and architectural grandeur it became a national symbol of civic self-destruction fifty years later. This book reasserts the profound importance of our urban architecture -- culturally socially aesthetically. This book not only tells a cautionary tale of the destruction of a single great building but of our collective history." Extracts from a review in the Loss Angeles Times by Ross Miller: New York City’s Pennsylvania Station was built to last from steel fine quarried stone and travertine it was reduced to rubble in 1963. The architect Charles McKim inspired by the Roman Baths of Caracalla built a monumental space that enclosed six city blocks. The Pennsylvania Station was vandalized so completely by the company that commissioned it that nothing remains but a fast-receding memory. Lorraine Diehl a writer and admirer of the station’s architecture and social role has written its history. In vivid pictures that include scenes from construction to demolition Diehl chronicles the station’s past from its inspired origins as a vision of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s president Alexander Cassatt through its dedication in 1910 and eventual destruction. Diehl has written more than an architectural profile. This is a story about people who aspire to great accomplishments. Cassatt’s plans for Pennsylvania Station began as annoyance over the problem of the Hudson River crossing. Until land was purchased on Manhattan’s West Side and tunnels were begun under the river Cassatt’s railroad was forced to stop at the water’s edge in Jersey City. These problems were made even more dramatic because of the railroad’s direct competition with Commodore Vanderbilt’s New York Central which already had direct access to the city and a gateway at the top of Park Avenue. Diehl tries to capture the spirit of a place lost forever. “The Late Great Pennsylvania Station” allows the reader to see and feel the loss. Great buildings are part of a country’s accumulated history a physical link with the past. There is much of value in this monograph. Four Walls, Eight Windows paperback
