1948réf. 144891New York: E.P. Dutton & Company 1948. First edition of this landmark novel from the library of Anais Nin. Octavo original black cloth. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Accompanied by a clipped dedication page that reads "For Anais Nin" boldly signed by Vidal laid in. Gore Vidal and Anais Nin's friendship emerged from their shared commitment to challenging the literary and cultural orthodoxies of mid-twentieth-century America. While Vidal’s incisive social satire and Nin’s lyrical explorations of erotic subjectivity differed in style both writers pursued themes of identity and transgression which created a foundation of mutual admiration. In fine condition. From the library of Anais Nin. An exceptional association linking these two great writers. Stylistically influenced by Hemingway this work "is distinguished by its honesty and lack of self-pity; the central figure is unexceptional in every respect but his sexual choices" Stringer 690. "One of the best novels of its kind. . . . It isnt sentimental and it is frank without trying to be sensational and shocking" Christopher Isherwood. E.P. Dutton & Company hardcover

réf. 9380New York: Crown Publishers 1976. Full Leather. Fine binding. Octavo. 160 pp. illus. First edition first printing thus. Full bound in burgundy morocco with blind-tooling sanding and dyed and acrylic-toned goat onlays. Top edge gilt with sgraffito designed. Hand-woven silk endbands. Housed in clamshell box. In this binding Brenda Gallagher has drawn from Boyce's erotic illustrations to render a beautifully blind-tooled drawing spanning both covers. Stamped onlays and sanded details bring the binding into perfect union with the text. Gallagher has subtly titled the cover by embedding both the author's name and title within the blind tooling. A remarkably designed and excellently executed binding capturing the spirit of Nin's prose and quite directly the character of Boyce's drawings. Gallagher is a design bookbinder and a graduate of the American Academy of Bookbinding. Crown Publishers unknown
