1813rif. 1000943Montpelier: Wright and Sibley one part 1813. Hardcover. Fair. Significant wear to the entire volume spine illegible front board lacks leather no front or rear endpapers preliminaries or aftermatter firmly bound but some pages proud and a few loose. The volume which is comprised of three separately paginated sections bound in one all dealing with the causes of and Vermont's response to the War of 1812. It opens with "Proceedings &c. "no title page or imprint which is a 52 page chronicle by the Democratic Republican side of the controversy surrounding the election of Federalist Martin Chittenden by the Vermont House of Representatives in the contested gubernatorial election of 1813. An election that saw three term Governor Jonas Galusha fail to win a plurality due to voter anger over his support for the War of 1812. The Democratic Republicans complained of many schemes by the Federalists to secure the office. The Federalist success in the House election remains unexplained by anything other than chicanery and these pages have several examples of the schemes being carried out and inducements being offered. Not in Gilman or Bassett Section two which carries the imprint of Wright and Sibley Montpelier 1813 is the "Protest of the Minority of the House of Representatives of the State of Vermont on the Question of Adopting the Reported Answer to His Excellency's Speech November 10 1813." Not in Gilman or Bassett Governor Martin Chittenden His Excellency opposed the War of 1812 and in one of his first official acts he ordered the Vermont Militia of which he was the former commander back to Vermont from Plattsburgh New York. Their officers refused to obey his orders. Subsequently the American victory at the Battle of Plattsburgh doomed Chittenden's future political prospects. Wright & Sibley published a partisan Democratic Republican newspaper in Montpelier The Freemen's Press. Gilman says of them that they "appear to have been the leading Democrats of Montpelier and the neighboring towns." There follows the main body of the volume a 240 page section which sadly lacks the concluding 4 or 5 pages with last existing page being badly torn. This section begins with no title page or imprint however above the heading appears the signature of William Slade- Cornwall. The section which is annotated presumably by Slade the following section appears to be annotated in the same hand is comprised of letters between James Monroe & William Pinkney and their English counterparts regarding treaty negotiations. The treaty begins on page 146 titled "TREATY OF amity commerce and navigation between his Britannic majesty and the United States of America." This would be the so-called MonroePinkney Treaty of 1806 a treaty drawn up by diplomats of the United States and Britain as a renewal of the Jay Treaty of 1795. It was rejected by President Thomas Jefferson and never took effect. The treaty was negotiated by minister to England James Monroe and his associate William Pinkney on behalf of the administration of President Thomas Jefferson and Lord Holland and Lord Auckland on behalf of the government headed by Lord Grenville. The account herein closes with a letter from the new Foreign Secretary George Canning regretting the American response to the negations but happy that the Leopard-Chesapeake affair is no longer preventing discussion of other matters. This letter is the incomplete bit. Finally the volume turns to matter just alluded to with a new section also without title page or imprint letters between James Monroe James Madison and George Canning the British Foreign Secretary regarding the ChesapeakeLeopard Affair an attack on an American military vessel in American waters by a British warship resulting in the impressment of four American sailors as deserters from the British Navy. The incident outraged the American public as President Thomas Jefferson noted: "Never since the Battle of Lexington have I seen this country in such a state of exasperation as at present and eve Wright and Sibley (one part) hardcover

1847rif. 8644Springfield IL: George R. Weber Public Printer 1847. 15th Assembly 1st Session. Broadside 21 cm x 14 cm printed on one side in black ink. Near fine. A brief report for the Illinois Legislature on those seeking expenses due to the 'Hancock difficulties' of 1846. It states that due to the "advanced stage" of the legislative session there is not ample time to investigate the claims of money owed and destroyed property and for the time the "agents for said claimants have leave to withdraw their accounts at pleasure." The briefness of this item as well as its matter-of-fact style masks the horrors of the events that it eludes to: the Martyrdom and the forced exile of the Mormons from Nauvoo. Flake/Draper 4189. 1805rif. 114941805. Original Wrappers. Very Good binding. 12mo. 19 1 blank pp. First edition. As issued stitched in plain wrapper; a few leaves unopened. Light wear to the covers including some silverfishing to the bottom inner margin of the front wrapper and to the deckled edges; light soiling but largely a remarkably copy; contents clean. An address criticizing incumbent Pennsylvania governor Thomas McKean and recommending Simon Snyder as governor in the 1805 election. While Snyder lost to McKean in a contentious 1805 contest he would ultimately win in 1808 and serve three terms. The language early in the address is salient: "Principles and not men were the foundations on which American independence was established . Principles and not men have been the objects of contest ever since between the several parties which have arisen under our government; but we are now brought to a point when it is to be determined by the public suffrage whether men setting at defiance the wishes of the people and the principles of representative government shall govern Pennsylvania" p. 3. It is perhaps comforting to realize that some things never change including campaign rhetoric. This is an unusual copy as the title should ready: ". . . Notice at Lancaster on April 3d 1805"; but the "3d" is not printed. This appears to be an unrecorded variant. Perhaps the type fell out or was battered whatever the case it differs from the others in the impression. A cursory comparison suggests this is the only difference. 1942rif. 053306Ankara: TBMM Hususi" Letterhead Dated 11. IV. 1942 Ankara 1942. Soft cover. Very Good. Original manuscript autograph letter signed ALS by Ali Çetinkaya sent to Turkish doctor Ethem Akif Battalgil who was the father of Fahire Battalgil Battalgazi who was the first Turkish zoologist. For Battalgil's brother's death Çetinkaya is conveying his condolences. The letter was written and signed by Ali Çetinkaya but he added his wife and daughter. Dated 11. IV. 1942 Ankara. Ali Çetinkaya also known as "Kel" Ali Bey was an Ottoman-born Turkish army officer and politician who served eight terms in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey including a period in 1939-40 as his country's first Minister of Transport. He was born in Kara Hisâr-i Sâhib present-day Afyonkarahisar in Hüdavendigâr Vilayet as the son of Ahmed Efendi. He studied in the Bursa Military High School Bursa Askerî Idadisi . After graduating from military high school he entered the Ottoman Military Academy Mekteb-i Füsûn-u Harbiyye-i Sâhâne In 1898 he graduated the academy and joined the Ottoman military as a Second Lieutenant Mülâzim-i Sani . During World War I he served for the army in the Caucasus and Galicia fronts. When the Greek forces were landing at Smyrna on May 15 1919 he was a lieutenant colonel and the commander of 172nd Infantry Regiment stationed in the Aegean coastal town of Ayvalik. His regiment was under the command of the 56th Division of Hürrem Bey. Ali played a key role in the first stage of the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 starting with the opening battle. He was briefly able to hold back the advance into the city of Greek occupation forces. His action is considered to mark the first shots fired by regular forces in the 1919-22 Greco-Turkish War although there were earlier confrontations in which irregular militias participated including the battle involving Hasan Tahsin in Izmir as well as actions in Urla and Ödemis. The hill in Ayvalik from where the first shots were fired is now called Ilk Kursun Tepesi First Bullet Hill. Today there is a military rehabilitation center on that hill. After the war Ali Çetinkaya was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly for eight successive terms and served until 1942 holding ministerial posts in six different governments including with the formation of a Ministry of Transport becoming Turkey's first Minister of Transport. Ali Çetinkaya is considered a hero in Turkey. Cunda Island of Ayvalik was renamed Alibey Adasi Ali Bey Island after him although the old name remains in common use. TBMM Hususi" Letterhead, Dated 11. Meclis-i Mebûsân The Chamber of Deputies of the Ottoman Empire was the lower house of the General Assembly the Ottoman Parliament. Unlike to the upper house the Senate the members of the Chamber of Deputies were elected by the general Ottoman populace although suffrage was limited to males of a certain financial standing among other restrictions that varied over the Chamber's lifetime. The Second Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire began shortly after Abdul Hamid II was forced to restore the constitutional monarchy after the 1908 Young Turk Revolution. The period established many political groups and parties. Ahmet Riza became the first President of the Chamber in 1908. An amendment in 1909 to the original 1876 constitution resulted in the Chamber gaining more true political power at the expense of the non-democratically elected Senate and the Sultan. A series of elections during this period resulted in the gradual ascendance of the Committee of Union and Progress's CUP domination in politics. The second largest party Liberal Unionist Party LU Turkish: Hürriyet ve Itilâf was in fact a coalition of parties led by Prince Sabahaddin. This is a rare protocol register book of Meclis-i Mebûsân.
