The material of the work comes from Giraud the French Consul in Athens and from the Capuchin monks settled there judiciously mixed with scholarly accounts by Meurs and others. The work was highly regarded for many years although Spon had made it quite clear that neither Guillet nor his brother as he had claimed had been to the city. In fact even Laborde remarks that Guillet had an 'intelligence remarquable des choses de l'antiquite.'
