Best.-Nr. 363449London and Edinburgh; New York; Glasgow and London: T.N. Foulis; Grosset & Dunlap; Collins; Magna Books; Thomas Y. Crowell; Collins; M.A. Donohue. Hardcover. Good. Frank Brangwyn; Sarkis Katchadourian; Robert Stewart Sherrifs; Edmund J. Sullivan; Willy Pogany; Marjorie Anderson . A nice-looking lot of eight 8 different editions of the Sufi poet's best-loved classic epic poems. The individual volumes are illustrated beautifully by a range of different artists and in multiple formats but each volume is in hardcover format and in at least Good condition with a few volumes being markedly more lovely. The poet Omar Khayyam or Khayyami was born likely at Nishapur in the Persian northeast somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname "Khayyam" means "tent-maker" in Persian which might like St. Paul/Saul have denoted his father's vocation and major income-source. The lot is comprised of the following: 1 Ruba'iyat of Omar Khayyam Edinburgh and London: T.N. Foulis 1920 a seeming First Edition Thus being likely a reprint of the Second Edition of Macmillan & Co. from 1859. Bound in a quarto hardcover format light gray cloth over boards sharp and distinct gilt-stamped lettering to spine brown-stamped designs to front cover. Light scuffing to edges tips but clean of interior and unmarked. Augmented with the uber-scarce decorated paper dust jacket chipped along top edge and then protected further by stiff Mylar jacket. Five full-color plates by the incomparable artist Frank Brangwyn tipped-in onto stiff card stock quite fine including at frontis. Unpaginated but roughly 80 pp. including a two-page vocabular; 2 Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam published in New York by Grosset & Dunlap in 1946 Very Good condition skinny octavo format bound in black cloth over boards blind-stamped illustration to front cover gilt lettering to spine. Fine Very Good clipped dust jacket too protected in a Demco sleeve. Paintings and decorations illustrations galore by the Iranian artist Sarkis Katchadourian. 131 pp. including vocabulary.; 3 Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam the Khorasan Edition of 1978 edited by George F. Maine being a reprint of the 1947 edition. Fine condition octavo hardcover edition bound in light brown cloth over boards gilt lettering and design to front cover and spine with a Very Good condition printed illustrated paper dust jacket but that has a short closed tear to rear panel top. Maine's extensive introduction and notes and then some rather bracing full-color illustrations printed on coated paper by Robert Stewart Sherriffs quite fine. 224 pp.; 4 Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam published in 1992 in Leicester England by Magna Books. Glossy pictorial cloth over boards Fine condition reproduced in a Near Fine condition paper dust jacket and with illustrated endpapers front and rear. Unpaginated but roughly 80 pp.; 5 Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Cameo Edition Near Fine condition exemplar bound in blue cloth with gilt lettering and cameo of Khayyam to front cover sunned along spine to light brown. Housed in a battered but still viable paper-covered slipcase chipped along top edge. Based upon the First and Fifth Versions and illustrated by Edmund J. Sullivan. 193 pp.; 6 Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam hardcover octavo format in Very Good condition overall published by Thomas Y. Crowell New York n.d. rubbed still gilt-stamped lettering and design to front cover and spine then protected further by stiff Mylar jacket. Top edges gilt rough-cut fore-edges; 7 Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam augmented with fine black-and-white illustrations of Marjorie Anderson. Cute little pocketbook-sized item burgundy flexible cloth over boards Fine condition housed in a Good condition paper-covered cardboard slipcase with cameo cutout in Near Fine condition. Published by Collins of Glasgow and London n.d. 126 1 pp.; 8 Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam published in Chicago by M.A. Donohue n.d. but probably early 1900s. Short little pocketbook-sized exemplar bound in black cloth over boards rubbed gilt lettering to spine to front cover and with an affixed color paper illustration there. Bumping to spine head and foot else quite fine of interior a bit toned. 150 pp. and with biographical preface Andrew Lang's "To Omar Khayyam" Edward FitzGerald's "Omar Khayyam the stronomer-Poet of Persia and then Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam being the fourth edition thereof.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
