1863rif. 843421863. Phillipps Charles Spencer March. Jurisprudence. London J. Murray 1863. vii 373 1 pp. Brown textured library cloth with gilt stamped title to spine institutional gilt stamp and insignia to covers. Spine faded joints heavily worn hinges cracked but holding. Corners and spine ends worn. Bookplate to front free endpaper. Property stamp to title page. Worn but a good copy. $250. Phillipps examines the meaning of jurisprudence and distinguishes it from the more intuitive concept of justice. He argues that the fundamental principles of justice are matters of instinct and conscience not science. While some jurists might be led astray by "sophistry" even simple people can grasp true justice. Phillipps compares jurisprudence to a scientific language for expressing thought and suggests it is possible to create a "scientific system" of jurisprudence on the basis of any legal principles whether they are just or arbitrary. unknown
