Twenty-one additional books were also published by Grant Richards and then later by Chatto & Windus and Sampson Low. The earliest titles include Helen Bannerman's The Story of Little Black Sambo 1899. Publisher's light green cloth ruled and titled in dark green. . 24mo. With 24 color illustrations. Binding slightly dust soiled. Bookseller's ticket in lower corner of front pastedown. Some toning to free endpapers but otherwise a very good bright and clean copy of an uncommon book. The titular "Little White Barbara" bears the nickname because despite her doting aunts' best efforts she remains pale sad and so thin that "you could only see her by looking through a telescope" p. 42. After supplying their niece with cod liver oil and relaxing days by the fire to no avail Aunt Dosy and Aunt Posy call in Dr. Funnyman to appraise Barbara's situation. 1994Best.-Nr. 406067New York: Pantheon 1994. A fine copy. 8vo. 112 pages. Original cloth-backed boards; dust jacket. FIRST EDITION first printing the suppressed first state lacking the final two lines of verse on the last page. According to Spiegelman's agent Deborah Karl Pantheon finished publication of the book and sent out author's copies for review. Coming home on the train Karl noticed the mistake on the last page and informed Spiegelman whose initial reaction was to call for the entire run to be reprinted. Instead Pantheon floated the lines in to correct the error and save costs. This is presumably one of only a small handful likely to have been preserved of this first issue. Pantheon unknown

1863Best.-Nr. 843421863. Phillipps Charles Spencer March. Jurisprudence. London J. Murray 1863. vii 373 1 pp. Brown textured library cloth with gilt stamped title to spine institutional gilt stamp and insignia to covers. Spine faded joints heavily worn hinges cracked but holding. Corners and spine ends worn. Bookplate to front free endpaper. Property stamp to title page. Worn but a good copy. $250. Phillipps examines the meaning of jurisprudence and distinguishes it from the more intuitive concept of justice. He argues that the fundamental principles of justice are matters of instinct and conscience not science. While some jurists might be led astray by "sophistry" even simple people can grasp true justice. Phillipps compares jurisprudence to a scientific language for expressing thought and suggests it is possible to create a "scientific system" of jurisprudence on the basis of any legal principles whether they are just or arbitrary. unknown
