Near Fine/Very Good. 498pp. Octavo 22 cm Ivory white cloth over boards with gilt stamping on the backstrip and front board. Illustrated. In the dust jacket with rubbing to the panels. Part of the Biographies in Latter-day Saint History series. Emmeline B. Wells 1828-1921 was born in Petersham Massachusetts. She served as the fifth General President of the Relief Society a position which she held for 11 years. When Emmeline B. Wells took on this public role she was 82 years old- an age when most men and women have been long retired. Not only was she was a wife and mother but she was also a prolific writer and a proponent of women's rights particularly during the woman suffrage movement in the United States. Brigham Young University professor emeritus of history Carol Cornwall Madsen writes in her article Emmeline B. Wells: A Fine Soul Who Served Ensign July 2003 "By the end of the 1870s Emmeline was considered one of the 'leading sisters' of the Church. Her association with the Exponent had made her name well known in Latter-day Saint circles and her written contributions to eastern women's papers refuting the misconceptions about LDS women had brought her name to the attention of national suffragists. She reminded the readers of these papers that Latter-day Saint women could vote when most of them could not; that LDS women were educated at local colleges and were engaged in many professions including medicine and law when most other women were not; and that they headed their own organizations and contributed to the economic welfare of their communities. 1906ref. 7392San Francisco: A.M. Robertson 1906. Hardcover. Fine. First edition. Very scarce. 87pp. Portraits from early photographs. Original three-quarter brown leather marbled boards gilt-lettered spine. Spine ends slightly rubbed a hint of scattered foxing free endpapers with offsetting from binders glue. Overall a fine copy. By Bruce Cornwall his son. This work was issued in a very small edition printed for private distribution. An important narrative of Cornwall's expedition across the plains to California. Cornwall in company with his brother and Tom Fallon the famous trapper and scout who acted as guide left St. Joe early in April of 1848 just prior to the Gold Rush. The narrative records the encounter with the Mormons 4000 strong under Brigham Young at Council Bluffs; the capture of Cornwall and his companions by the Indians; their final escape and arrival at Fort Laramie; the journey across the Rockies to Fort Bridger and Fort Hall; killing of the guide Fallon by the Hill Indians; the attempt to cross the Humboldt Sink and Desert with a copy of Frémont's Route Map as their sole dependence; final arrival in California eight thousand dollars in debt; acquirement of half a million within the year; the Squatter War Cornwall's active part therein and defense of Sutter; and more. Cornwall became a member of the State Legislature; built the first house in Sacramento; was President of the Society of California Pioneers; and assumed a position in the affairs of the state which gives to these memoirs an authority possessed by very few other records of the sort. Gregor was an English landowner and MP for Cornwall from 1709-1806. Here he is highly critical of notable radicals Thomas Hardy John Horne Tooke John Thelwall and Robert Watt not so much for their beliefs in reform as their methods and enthusiasm which he deems "rash intemperate and improvident." He further criticizes the Constitutional and London Corresponding Societies for condoning and even celebrating the acts of these radicals citing evidence from their trials to highlight their destructive nature. As to the home in Redding there are a few letters from Southern New England Telephone Company about their inability to provide the level of service that Cornwall desires until enough Redding residents become willing to pay for a higher level of service to enable the company to invest profitably in upgrading the levels of service offered. The phone company explains that Jesse's annual Redding bill of $26.80 was that high partly due to the fact that telephone wires for his house had been attached to 44 poles belonging to AT & T for which an annual 20 cent per pole rental charge was due. There are a few letters to and from the CT Secretary os State one of which deals with registration and markers license plates for three cars a 30-35 H P. Several letters and notices are to Jesse as a stockholder in The Bridgeport Hardware Mfg. Co. and other businesses. This engaging account of Southwest England features a harmoniously designed binding by an important workshop. Our author British civil servant and writer Arthur Hamilton Norway 1859-1938 had an extremely varied literary output which included fiction travelogues and literary analysis. In the present work part of a "Highways and Byways" series produced by the Macmillan Company the author provides a delightful journey through the landscape history and folklore of his native Devon and neighboring Cornwall. The text is accompanied by a charming series of illustrations by Joseph Pennell 1857-1926 and Hugh Thomson 1860-1920; these alternate between cheerful sketches of the towns and scenery and romantic caricatures of the historic locals. The attractive binding is a fine example of the work of the Zaehnsdorf firm long a top-ranked English bindery. Born in Pest Hungary Joseph Zaehnsdorf 1816-86 served his apprenticeship in Stuttgart worked at a number of European locations as a journeyman and then settled in London where he was hired first by Westley and then by Mackenzie before opening his own workshop in 1842. His son and namesake took over the business at age 33 when the senior Joseph died and the firm flourished under the son's leadership becoming a leading West End bindery. Over the years Zaehnsdorf employed a considerable number of distinguished binders including the Frenchman Louis Genth who was chief finisher from 1859-84 and trained a number of others including Roger de Coverly and Sarah Prideaux. A family-run business until 1947 the Zaehnsdorf bindery continued to produce consistently attractive and innovative designs executed with unfailing skill. Here a complex design of softly curving foliage and bright flowers mirrors the serene countryside described in the book's pages. The bookplate is most likely that of American heiress Ophelia Fowler Duhme 1854-1921 who had a handful of attractively illustrated bookplates made for her throughout her collecting life.
