2023réf. 1004NY: Knopf 2023. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Association copy inscribed on the title page in the Nobel Prize winner's small script: "For Eric and Tania Idle from Jim Watson." Eric Idle is the English actor comedian musician and writer best and very hilariously known as a member of the British surreal comedy group Monty Python. Laid in is a typed letter signed TLS on Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory stationary roughly 4 x 7" dated July 2003. Conveying the book it's addressed to Tania Eric Idle's wife and is seven sentences in all perhaps most intriguingly: "Being like you on Paul Allen's super St. Petersburg weekend was a once in a lifetime experience." Sounds fun. It also mentions enclosing two short speeches but those are no longer present. Watson's first book The Double Helix 1968 telling the story of his and Crick's discovery of DNA remains one of the most successful science memoirs of all time. Thirty five years late DNA: The Secret Life serves as layman's introduction and a longview: "Watson provides the general reader with clear explanations of molecular processes and emerging technologies. He shows us how DNA continues to alter our understanding of human origins and of our identities as groups and as individuals." A fine book quarto in blue cloth color illustrations and photos throughout. In a near fine jacket with a nifty elegant hologram plate at center as you shift your perspective the image changes from a double helix to a bee foraging on flowers; it has a paper clip impression at the top of the rear panel. The letter is fine once folded in three. Knopf hardcover

Description: "In this compelling and accessible account of the life and thought of the Scottish Enlightenment philosopher David Hume 1711-1776 Professor Christopher J. Berry of the University of Glasgow argues that the belief in the uniformity of human nature was at the heart of Hume’s thought. In this volume Berry introduces classic 'Humean' themes including the evolution of social institutions as an unintended consequence of the pursuit of self-interest the importance of custom and habit in establishing rules of just conduct and the defence of commerce and luxury. FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 224 pp. ; 187 illus. 150 in color. -- with a bonus offer--; A few years before his death in 1984 the conceptual artist Stan VanDerBeek recalled a dream he had of the ideal exhibition space: a dark room with "projected images movies and stills everywhere" which he playfully referred to as "Amazement Park." Taking inspiration from that dream this project combines artwork by the influential filmmaker and artist with work by his daughter Sarah and son Johannes both contemporary artists. This unique book captures the ensuing exhibition: a studio-like space that changed every month for one year and featured works by all three artists. The drawings photographs video and sculpture that revolved in and out of the exhibition reflect the artists' common interest in re-combination and collage ephemeral materials and architectural forms. The experience afforded son and daughter the chance for a working dialog with each other and their father who died when they were still children. Editor Ian Berry interviews Sara and Johannes VanDerBeek about their work and that of their father and essays explore each artist's oeuvre in detail. . 2012. 3791352083 . Prestel Publishing paperback

Complex explosions of colour and line swirling patterns and collages made of natural objects are signature elements of Tomaselli's work. His large-scale assemblage paintings often built onto wooden surfaces and later varnished are rich creations laced with historic and cultural references. They invite close viewing and this beautiful large-format volume allows readers to study in brilliant detail the intricacies of each piece. In addition to full reproductions there are also illustrations of details magnified to reveal the paintings' texture that is so critical to Tomaselli's technique. An interview with the artist provides enriching background while essays by the authors as well as the prominent art historian Linda Norden offer insight into the context and themes of this fascinating American artist. An excerpt from an unpublished work by bestselling writer David Shields who is an ardent fan of Fred Tomaselli rounds off this volume. . 2009. 3791343920 . Prestel USA hardcover
