DESCRIPTION TRUNCATED DUE TO CHARACTER LIMITS. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR A COMPLETE VERSION. Only edition. One of the cruelest hoaxes in British history and the inspiration for a wave of anti-Catholic violence the Popish Plot was the invention of Titus Oates an Anglican clergyman and his friend Dr. Israel Tonge a cleric and passionate anti-Catholic. They pretended to have discovered a Jesuit plot to assassinate the King massacre Protestants and set James Duke of York the King's Catholic brother on the throne. The trial of Green Berry and Hill was one of its most shameful episodes. In October 1678 Godfrey a justice of the peace to whom Oates first described the plot was found dead in a ditch apparently the victim of murder. The Catholic community was blamed and Green Berry and Hill were eventually hanged for his murder. Many questions about this case remain however including the exact circumstances of Godfrey's death. One theory holds that Godfrey was killed by Oates and his supporters to underpin their own invented plot another that he was murdered for reasons unconnected with any Catholic plot. It is also possible that Godfrey committed suicide; when his body was found it was manipulated to fit the plot scenario. In any event Godfrey was buried in an elaborate funeral as a martyr to the Protestant cause. This event stoked the fires of anti-Cath. unknown books

1724ref. 56279Amsterdam: R. & G. Wetstein 1724. Very good plus. Well-preserved Enlightenment-era edition of the Roman playwright - from the celebrated collection of the Duchess of Berry who famously sold her books after her failed coup in 1832. The Duchess of Berry was an important member of the House of Bourbon's royal family After her husband's assassination in 1820 the Duchess's son became the heir apparent to the French throne. But when the July Revolution of 1830 deposed the Bourbons the Duchess and her son went into exile. In 1832 however the Duchess of Berry clandestinely returned to France to lead a rebellion becoming "the most wanted woman in France" Samuels. Her coup failed and she was once again exiled; her story would later be dramatized in fiction by Alexandre Dumas as LES LOUVES DE MACHECOUL 1859. Realizing she would never return to her beloved library of some 8000 volumes at Chateau Rosny she made the decision to sell it. It was then one of the most famous libraries in France with a tremendous range in philosophy history travel science law theology fiction and theater. This copy's bookplates mark its provenance from the library of the Duchess bearing the engraved bookplate of Rosny in all three volumes. An important translation from the era's great translator Anne Dacier from the library of a great book collector the Duchess of Berry. Three 12mo volumes 6.25'' x 3.75'' each.
