1950ref. 848881950. Keenan Joseph Berry 1888-1954. Brendan Francis Brown. Crimes Against International Law. Washington: Public Affairs Press 1950. x 226 pp. Original publisher's cloth bound hardcover some shelfwear fading to boards and spine in worn dust jacket. Internally clean. A good copy. $125. This work explains the legal basis and consequences of the post-World War II war crimes trials particularly focusing on the Tokyo War Crimes Trial. Keenan served as Chief Counsel for the United States at the Tokyo trial and Brown was a Juridical Consultant. They provide an historical analysis and recount the arguments used by both the prosecution and the defense. This work centers on the fundamental legal cleavage between the prosecution's contention for a moral notion of law and the defense's position that law is solely the command of a political sovereign. The authors argue that the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials established a body of rules that could serve as precedents for future crimes against international law. The book discusses the "rules of international law" as defined by these trials the reasons supporting them and the arguments presented in opposition offering an appraisal of the development and application of international law at that time. The book includes a bibliography on pages 216-222. "This volume by the Chief of Counsel of the Prosecution in the Tokyo Trial and a judicial consultant at the trial constitutes a philosophical and historical examination of the law and procedure of the war crimes trials in general and the Tokyo trial in particular. . The volume deserves particular study by those interested in the development of international criminal law and will take its place as an important contribution to the growth of international law in general.": Quincy Wright Journal of Criminal Law 41:803-805 806 cited in Marke A Catalogue of the Law Collection at New York University 1953 653. unknown books

DESCRIPTION TRUNCATED DUE TO CHARACTER LIMITS. PLEASE CONTACT US FOR A COMPLETE VERSION. Only edition. One of the cruelest hoaxes in British history and the inspiration for a wave of anti-Catholic violence the Popish Plot was the invention of Titus Oates an Anglican clergyman and his friend Dr. Israel Tonge a cleric and passionate anti-Catholic. They pretended to have discovered a Jesuit plot to assassinate the King massacre Protestants and set James Duke of York the King's Catholic brother on the throne. The trial of Green Berry and Hill was one of its most shameful episodes. In October 1678 Godfrey a justice of the peace to whom Oates first described the plot was found dead in a ditch apparently the victim of murder. The Catholic community was blamed and Green Berry and Hill were eventually hanged for his murder. Many questions about this case remain however including the exact circumstances of Godfrey's death. One theory holds that Godfrey was killed by Oates and his supporters to underpin their own invented plot another that he was murdered for reasons unconnected with any Catholic plot. It is also possible that Godfrey committed suicide; when his body was found it was manipulated to fit the plot scenario. In any event Godfrey was buried in an elaborate funeral as a martyr to the Protestant cause. This event stoked the fires of anti-Cath. unknown books

Well-preserved Enlightenment-era edition of the Roman playwright - from the celebrated collection of the Duchess of Berry who famously sold her books after her failed coup in 1832. The Duchess of Berry was an important member of the House of Bourbon's royal family After her husband's assassination in 1820 the Duchess's son became the heir apparent to the French throne. But when the July Revolution of 1830 deposed the Bourbons the Duchess and her son went into exile. In 1832 however the Duchess of Berry clandestinely returned to France to lead a rebellion becoming "the most wanted woman in France" Samuels. Her coup failed and she was once again exiled; her story would later be dramatized in fiction by Alexandre Dumas as LES LOUVES DE MACHECOUL 1859. Realizing she would never return to her beloved library of some 8000 volumes at Chateau Rosny she made the decision to sell it.
