1987ref. 70966California: Counterpoint 1987. 16th printing. Paperback. New. 192 pp. Octavo 25 cm. White wraps with woodcut illustration. "My work has been motivated" Wendell Berry has written "by a desire to make myself responsibly at home in this world and in my native and chosen place." In Home Economics. Mr. Berry explores this process and continues to discuss what it means to make oneself "responsibly at home." His title reminds us that the very root of economics is stewardship household management. To paraphrase Confucius a healthy planet is made up of healthy nations that are simply healthy communities sharing common ground and communities are gatherings of households. A measure of the health of the planet is economics - the health of its households. Any process of destruction or healing must begin at home. Mr. Berry speaks of the necessary coherence of the "Great Economy" as he argues for clarity in our lives our conceptions and our communications. To live is not to pass time but to spend time. In like-new condition. "Given is Wendell Berry's first collection of new poems in ten years. As rich and varied as any before this book is divided into four parts. We begin with a collection of short occasional pieces ranging from political cautions to love poems and celebrations. Then follows a play in verse 'Sonata at Payne Hollow' a beautiful evocation of the lives of the painter Harlan Hubbard and his wife Anna. Over the past twenty-five years Mr. Berry has been at work on a long sequence of poems that has resulted from his Sunday morning walks of meditation and observation and this present volume concludes with eight year's worth of new 'Sabbath Poems.' For five decades Wendell Berry has been a poet of great clarity and purpose. He is a writer whose imagination is grounded by the pastures of his chosen place and the rooms and porches of his family's home. His work is one of devotion to family and community to the earth and her creatures to the memories of the past and the hope of the future. His work stands alongside WIlliam Carlos Williams and Robert Frost as a rigorous American testament."-from the front dust jacket flap. Shoemaker Hoard hardcover books

"The political import of complex current events requires great urgency clarity and care. Nothing less than the future of our nation is at stake. Wendell Berry's 'Citizenship Papers' collecting nineteen new essays is a ringing alarm a call for resistance and responsibility and a reminder of how fragile our commonwealth has become at the dawn of the twenty-first century. 'We are encouraged to believe that the governments and corporations of the affluent parts of the world are run by rational people using rational processes to make rational decisions. The dominant faith of the world in our time is rationality. That in an age of reason the human race or the most wealthy and powerful parts of it should be behaving with colosal irrationality outght to make us wonder if reason alone can lead us to do what is right.' from 'Two Minds.'-from the front dust jacket flap. 1870ref. 12823Newnan Ga: October 1 1870. Broadside 7.75 x 9 inches with engraved vignette at center. Old folds moderate foxing and dust-soiling light staining. Short closed tear to bottom edge. Overall very good. A delightful mid-19th-century Georgia railroad broadside advertising changes to the ticketing system for one of the southern rail lines owned by William Byrd Berry. Here rates for travel between Berry's hometown of Newnan and Carrollton or Bowdon are specified and the rates for children under the age of 10 are noted as half price. Further the broadside stipulates baggage is capped at fifty pounds and the excess will be charged "Express rates." The work is signed in type by "W.B. Berry & Co." and dated October 1 1870 in Newnan. The text is enhanced with a striking central vignette of a locomotive pulling several railcars through a mountainous region. William Byrd Berry 1831-1902 was a prominent businessman and landowner born and raised in Newnan Georgia. He served as president of various banks and was involved in a number of railroad interests in the state. As far as we can tell the present broadside is unrecorded. October 1 unknown books
