A short and entertaining introduction to thermodynamics that uses real-world examples to explain accessibly an important but subtle scientific theory A romantic description of the second law of thermodynamics is that the universe becomes increasingly disordered. But what does that actually mean Starting with an overview of the three laws of thermodynamics MacArthur "genius grant" winner R. Stephen Berry explains in this short book the fundamentals of a fundamental science. Readers learn both the history of thermodynamics which began with attempts to solve everyday engineering problems and ongoing controversy and unsolved puzzles. The exposition suitable for both students and armchair physicists requires no previous knowledge of the subject and only the simplest mathematics taught as needed. With this better understanding of one science readers also gain an appreciation of the role of research in science the provisional nature of scientific theory and the ways scientific exploration can uncover fundamental truths. Thus from a science of everyday experience we learn about the nature of the universe. Yale University Press hardcover

Best.-Nr. A9781442233621Hardback. New. Despite all her best efforts to break the cycle of catastrophic destructive patterns of mental illness Anna Berry found herself at the end of her rope-unemployed penniless homeless and in the throes of a psychotic episode that threatened to destroy her life. Alone and unwell she manages to find her grip on life seeks the help she needs and embarks on a life and career that illustrate that mental illness does not have to be ruinous. Unhinged: A Memoir of Enduring Surviving and Overcoming Family Mental Illness is a powerful memoir that chronicles Berry's life as both a casualty and survivor of family mental illness. From her point of rock-bottom to her own recovery as well as her efforts to help her still-afflicted mother and brother find hope and healing we see how she struggles to recognize her own illness while coping with the fallout from her family's other victims. In telling her story Berry uncovers the difficulties inherent in not only growing up with mental illness among family members but also the frustrations of not being able to recognize or handle the trajectory of her own illness. Yet after successfully finding methods of treating her symptoms Berry goes on to become a successful journalist and author who now helps educate the public about mental health through her writing while also serving as her mother's court-appointed legal guardian. This story shows the devastating impact of mental illness on whole families but offers readers a message of hope and healing. Berry's story is sure to resonate with the many people who deal with the mental illness of family members and their own struggles to cope with their own diagnoses. hardcover

Best.-Nr. 73009Sand Dollar Books 1974. First edition first printing. A personal copy of the late poet translator and editor Origin Cid Corman with his full signature on his small bookplate. This book is designed and printed by Clifford Burke at Cranium Press and with only 376 copies. Again an early relationship which would blossom into something deep and rich between both young Jack Shoemaker and Wendell Berry. Berry's contemporary poems look at ancient paintings of the Japanese. Close to fine and bright tall sewn wraps with a tiny blemish to top of spine. A lovely copy. Clean text which is unusual for Cid Corman thus without his marginalia and notes. The book was probably too attractive being Clifford Burke's design. Sand Dollar Books, 1974 paperback
