ref. 014925Elina Barthélémy dite Mademoiselle Elian (1819-?), soprano, chanteuse, fille du poète Auguste-Marseille Barthélémy, créatrice du rôle d'Inès dans La Favorite de Donizetti. L.A.S., 1er janvier 1836, 1p in-8. Paris, Delahaye, 1842, p.75). Peu commun. [362]

ref. 101473Tuesday June 8th. . Very good. - A four-page letter consisting of 240 words penned on 4 sides of 6 inch high by 4 inch wide laid paper with an attached integral leaf. The American operatic soprano Minnie Hauk writes to "Miss Halle" expressing her concerns that she might not be able to sing at a forthcoming charity concert "I can hardly say otherwise but that I write this in a frame of trepidation for fear of disappointing you. My Physician Dr. Mackenzie says that I must not think of singing for over a week at least. For you must know that after the second act of Carmen last evening I was taken with sudden hoarseness that I could hardly get through the remainder of the Opera." Mentioning to her doctor that she's anxious to sing at a Charity Concert the next Tuesday she writes that "the prospect is that I might be able to sing but you would have to take the chance and a decided answer could only be given on the day of the Concert." In case she can sing she lists those arias she'll perform including "Non conosci il bel suol" from "Mignon" an area from "Katherine & Petruchio" by Goetz and "La Serenata" from "Mefistofele". Signed in full "Minnie Hauk". Folded for mailing the letter was apparently once mounted with a strip of clear tape adhering to the right edge of the last page. Very good. The charity concert to which she refers was likely with the Halle Concert Society in Manchester England. The American operatic soprano and subsequently mezzo-soprano Minnie Hauk 1851-1929 began vocal studies with Achille Errani who set her up with the Max Maretzek Italian Opera Company. She made her debut at the age of 14 as Amina in "La sonnambula" performed in Brooklyn. Her Manhattan debut took place as Prascovia in "L'Etoile du Nord" in 1866 and by 1867 sang the role of Juliette in the American premiere of Gounod's "Romeo et Juliette". Her European debut took place at London's Covent Garden in 1868 followed by her Paris debut in 1869 when she was still but 18 years old. She subsequently appeared in Vienna and throughout Europe. Her intense performance of Bizet's "Carmen" brought new life & fame to what was then an unsuccessful opera. Her voice changed to mezzo-soprano which was recognized to be of great strength and depth. The doctor to who Minnie Hauk refers was the British physician Sir Morrell Mackenzie 1837-1892 one of the pioneers of laryngology. Mackenzie studied at the London Hospital becoming a member of the Royal College of Surgeons before undertaking studies in Paris Vienna and Budapest. Returning to London in 1862 he won the Jacksonian prize at the Royal College of Surgeons for his essay on the "Pathology and Treatment of Diseases of the Larynx: The Diagnostic Indications to Include the Appearance as Seen in the Living Person" and he devoted himself to specializing in diseases of the throat.
